Waymo Explores Charitable Tipping Feature for Robotaxi Riders

Waymo, the self-driving technology developer under the Alphabet umbrella, is reportedly investigating the implementation of a new feature. This potential addition would enable passengers in Waymo’s robotaxis to contribute a “tip” following their journey.

Instead of directly benefiting drivers, the proposed system directs tips to a charity selected by the rider.

Discovery Through App Analysis

The information regarding this feature surfaced thanks to Jane Manchun Wong, a security researcher. Wong, known for her recent successful hack of a Waymo vehicle’s display dome, uncovered the functionality while analyzing the code within Waymo’s Android application.

Her findings were shared on the social media platform X, detailing the process of “reverse engineering” the app.

Upon initiating the “add a ‘tip’” process, Wong identified a dropdown menu. This menu presents customers with a selection of charitable organizations to which their tip can be donated.

Waymo’s Response

When approached for comment by TechCrunch, a Waymo spokesperson acknowledged the company’s practice of exploring new features.

However, the spokesperson stated that Waymo does not provide commentary on unreleased innovations as part of their internal development process.
