Gen. John Raymond on Space Defense Public-Private Partnerships

General John “Jay” Raymond recently participated in TC Sessions: Space, addressing a number of important topics. His remarks were delivered shortly before the Space Force celebrated its inaugural anniversary, having been established on December 20, 2019.
During the discussion, the Space Force commander detailed how the newest branch of the military functions in a manner similar to a developing company, and offered guidance on lessons startups could draw from the Space Force’s approach. With a personnel count of just 2,400, General Raymond attributes this streamlined organization to his efforts in reducing hierarchical layers and granting greater authority to those making critical choices. He also addressed the present global political situation, noting that “China has rapidly advanced from a starting point to a significant capability” concerning operations in space. Consequently, General Raymond is prioritizing collaboration with international allies and innovative companies operating within those countries.
