Social Media CEOs Testify Before Congress - Facebook, Google, Twitter

The chief executive officers from Twitter, Facebook, and Google are scheduled to testify before the Senate Commerce Committee on Wednesday, marking another significant confrontation between major technology firms and the U.S. Congress.
This Senate session will concentrate on a specific area of policy – Section 230 of the Communications Decency Act – offering a more focused discussion than previous, broader tech-focused hearings. While seemingly a minor piece of legislation, this law provides crucial legal protection to internet companies, shielding them from responsibility for content created and shared by their users, encompassing everything from Facebook updates and Twitter messages to online reviews and comment areas.
Past hearings involving major technology companies have often lacked directness, rarely prompting the heads of these influential organizations to disclose substantial information. However, the combined impact of ongoing federal antitrust investigations, the proximity of a critical election occurring within the week, and several proposed bills that could fundamentally alter the legal foundation of their operations suggest a potentially more impactful and informative session.
A live broadcast of the hearing will be available starting at 10:00 AM ET on Wednesday, October 28, and can be viewed here (above). We will be closely monitoring the proceedings and providing updates on Section 230, as well as a summary of the most important points discussed throughout the day.
