Gardner revealed to TechCrunch that the concept for Walkstar stemmed from an online observation of a customized setup combining a vintage Sony Walkman with a pedometer.

This ingenious combination ensured music playback only during periods of walking. While the original source post remains elusive, it sparked Gardner’s idea.

“I considered this a remarkably clever solution and realized a similar effect could be replicated through an iPhone application,” Gardner explained. “It presented a potentially powerful motivational tool to promote increased walking.”

A Nostalgic User Interface

A particularly appealing feature of Walkstar is its retro-inspired interface. The app visually transforms your smartphone into a vibrant, portable cassette player, evoking the aesthetic of classic Walkmans.

Adding to the nostalgic ambiance, a subtle tape-hiss sound accompanies the commencement of music playback.
