VSCO Launches AI Moodboard - Collaborative Inspiration

VSCO Introduces AI-Powered Collaborative Moodboard: Canvas
VSCO, a prominent photo and video editing platform, announced the release of Canvas on Wednesday. This new feature is an AI-powered collaborative moodboard designed to broaden the application of VSCO’s tools among photographers and artists.
Core Functionality of Canvas
The moodboard, known as Canvas, allows users to import and modify their photographs utilizing VSCO’s established editing capabilities. This includes precise control over settings such as shadows, brightness, exposure, temperature, tint, grain, blur, vibrance, and hue.
Artificial intelligence integration becomes apparent when generating images from textual descriptions. Furthermore, the platform enables the selection of specific image areas, allowing users to employ a “region prompt” function. This feature leverages AI to recreate those designated portions based on provided text prompts.
A slider is incorporated to adjust the weighting of the region prompt, facilitating the creation of diverse image variations. This provides granular control over the AI’s influence on the generated output.
Collaboration and Ideation
Canvas facilitates seamless collaboration by allowing users to share moodboards with others involved in a project. This enables the collective development and refinement of creative concepts.
According to Eric Wittman, VSCO’s CEO, the platform addresses a common need among photographers. He explained to TechCrunch that photographers frequently rely on tools like Google Slides or Pinterest for project visualization, and VSCO aimed to create a more specialized tool centered around creator ideation.
Technology Behind Canvas
The moodboard feature is powered by technology originating from Facet, an image editing startup acquired by VSCO last year. Prior to its acquisition, Facet had secured over $13 million in funding.
Early Adoption and Future Plans
This marks VSCO’s initial foray into integrating AI features into its product suite. The company reports encouraging early results, with over 84% of content generated during the test phase utilizing AI capabilities.
VSCO intends to expand functionality by enabling users to search within VSCO and import photos uploaded to the platform directly into the moodboard.
Competitive Landscape
The launch of Canvas follows closely on the heels of Adobe’s unveiling of its own AI-driven moodboard. Other companies, including Visual Electric, Cove, and Kosmik, are also actively developing whiteboard and moodboard solutions to support collaborative idea generation.
Availability and Subscription Benefits
Canvas is now accessible to all VSCO users. However, subscribers to paid plans will receive additional credits for prompting and generating images with the AI model.
