Kellie Gerardi to Space: Virgin Galactic Research Mission

Virgin Galactic Expands Research Capabilities with New IIAS Partnership

Virgin Galactic has secured a new client, the International Institute for Astronautical Sciences (IIAS). This collaboration will see researcher, citizen scientist, and STEM advocate Kellie Gerardi participate in an upcoming dedicated Virgin Galactic spaceflight.

Gerardi’s flight will be dedicated to a series of scientific investigations. Her primary focus will be on evaluating healthcare technologies, notably a novel biomonitoring system.

Focus on Real-Time Astronaut Health Monitoring

This system is designed to analyze the physiological effects of space travel on astronauts as they occur. The goal is to gain deeper insights into the human body’s response to the space environment.

Gerardi isn’t new to reduced-gravity research. She has previously participated in numerous parabolic research flights, utilizing high-altitude aircraft to mimic weightlessness.

Transitioning from Simulated to Actual Spaceflight

However, this mission represents her inaugural journey to space itself. This transition highlights the advantages Virgin Galactic aims to provide to researchers. Previously, their work was limited to simulated zero-G environments.

Astroskin: A Comprehensive Sensor Array

The biomonitoring system undergoing testing, known as “Astroskin,” was created through a partnership between Canadian startup Hexoskin and the Canadian Space Agency.

Astroskin is a wearable collection of sensors. It’s engineered to monitor the effects of launch, weightlessness, re-entry, and landing on space travelers.

Fluid Dynamics Research for Space Applications

In addition to the biomonitoring system, Gerardi will conduct an experiment examining fluid dynamics. This research will contribute to the development of improved humidifiers and syringes specifically designed for use in space.

Expanding Commercial Research Opportunities

Virgin Galactic has previously confirmed similar research-focused missions. One such flight is scheduled for scientist Alan Stern, who will be conducting experiments for NASA and the Southwest Research Institute.

While the company receives significant attention for its space tourism offerings, the potential for commercial research represents a crucial component of its broader business strategy.
