Video Editing App Captions Goes Freemium to Drive Growth

Captions Shifts to Freemium Amidst TikTok and CapCut Concerns
The video editing application Captions is strategically adapting its business model to capitalize on the current ambiguity surrounding TikTok and CapCut’s operational future within the United States.
Transition to a Freemium Structure
Previously operating exclusively as a paid application, Captions, which receives backing from prominent investors like Kleiner Perkins, Sequoia Capital, and Andreessen Horowitz, is now embracing a freemium approach. This change is designed to enhance its competitiveness in the video editing landscape.
The company aims to directly challenge established players such as CapCut, InShot, and Invideo by offering a broader range of access options.
Features of the Free and Paid Tiers
The newly introduced free tier will provide users with fundamental video editing capabilities. These include features like subtitle addition, a teleprompter for streamlined recording, and voiceover functionality.
Conversely, the company is consolidating its advanced AI-driven features – encompassing AI avatars, intelligent editing tools, and a comprehensive social studio suite – within its paid subscription tier.
Addressing Potential Market Gaps
Captions CEO, Gaurav Misra, communicated to TechCrunch that the potential prohibition of CapCut would result in a significant number of users losing access to its editing tools. Captions intends to position itself as a viable alternative.
While the ultimate fate of TikTok and CapCut remains uncertain, Captions is proactively leveraging user apprehension to establish itself as a preferred choice.
Targeting a Wider Audience
“Currently, our application boasts a substantial array of AI-powered editing features,” Misra stated. “However, a considerable user base still relies on traditional video editing applications without utilizing AI capabilities. Our free tier is specifically designed to cater to this demographic.”
CapCut’s Market Dominance
Data from Sensor Tower reveals that CapCut has amassed over 1.3 billion downloads in the last two years. It currently maintains an average of 51.2 million daily active users and has generated over $460 million in revenue through in-app purchases.
Cost-Effective Free Tier
Misra further explained that the basic video editing features operate locally on user devices, eliminating server costs for the company. This allows Captions to offer these tools at no charge.
Future Plans for AI Features
The company intends to integrate more AI-powered features into lower-priced tiers as the operational costs associated with AI models decrease. Captions has already incorporated its AI creator feature into the $10 per month Pro plan.
