Researchers from the University of Waterloo in Canada are presenting innovative developments in prostheses and exoskeletons. Their work centers around the integration of cameras and artificial intelligence to achieve more fluid and human-like movement.

The ExoNet Project: Mimicking Natural Human Locomotion

The ExoNet project employs a wearable camera to capture video data. This footage is then processed using deep learning AI algorithms. The goal is to replicate the way humans instinctively adapt and refine their movements in response to varying surroundings.

This research aims to provide a more organic locomotion experience compared to current systems. Many existing systems rely on connections to smartphone applications or other external control devices.

Reducing Cognitive Load for Users

“Current methods can be both inconvenient and require significant mental effort,” explains Brokoslaw Laschowski, a PhD candidate at Waterloo, in a statement accompanying the research. “Users often need to pause, access their smartphone, and manually select the appropriate mode for each new activity.”

Focus on Robotic Exoskeletons

The research primarily concentrates on robotic exoskeletons. These devices are under development by numerous companies to aid individuals with mobility impairments. The ExoNet system aspires to eliminate the necessity for external user control, fostering more natural movement patterns.

Future Development and Challenges

Further refinement is, of course, necessary. The system currently performs optimally on level surfaces. Future efforts will focus on adapting it to more challenging environments, such as those frequently encountered by individuals with limited mobility.

The ultimate aim is for the system to proactively anticipate and adjust to these conditions.

“Our control methodology is designed to minimize the need for conscious human input,” Laschowski states. “Drawing a parallel to self-driving cars, we are developing autonomous exoskeletons capable of independent locomotion.”

Addressing Battery Life and Energy Harvesting

Several challenges remain. Battery life is a key concern. The research team is exploring methods to enhance longevity through a system that can recharge using the wearer’s own movements.
