Android 5.0 Lollipop's Smart Lock: A Convenience Feature

A common annoyance for smartphone users is the need to constantly unlock their devices, even when in a secure and private environment. Android 5.0 Lollipop addressed this issue with the introduction of Smart Lock.

Addressing Everyday Frustrations

Many users experience the inconvenience of needing to unlock their phones for simple tasks. This includes actions like changing music stations on apps such as Pandora or Spotify, or quickly responding to a message.

Even basic interactions, like utilizing voice commands ("OK Google?") or sending a brief text, require unlocking the device repeatedly throughout the day.

The situation is further complicated during physical activities. Unlocking a phone while it's secured in an exercise case can be particularly challenging.

Smart Lock's Three Core Components

Smart Lock aims to reduce these frustrations through three primary methods.

  • Trusted Places: Your phone will remain unlocked when you are within a designated geographical area.
  • Trusted Devices: Pairing with a Bluetooth or NFC device can trigger Smart Lock, keeping your phone unlocked while connected.
  • Trusted Face Unlock: The device can be unlocked simply by recognizing your face when the screen is activated, provided the front-facing camera has a clear view.

These features collectively provide a more seamless and user-friendly experience, minimizing the need for frequent unlocking.

Activating Smart Lock Functionality

The configuration of Smart Lock is initiated through the device's settings menu. To access these settings, swipe down from the top of your screen, similar to checking notifications. Then, select the gray time and date display, followed by tapping the "Settings" icon.

Prior to enabling Smart Lock, it is recommended to establish a device lock. A pattern can be utilized for this purpose, though PIN or password authentication are also viable alternatives.

Accessing Smart Lock Settings

Within the settings menu, navigate to the "Security" options and subsequently select "Smart Lock."

The Smart Lock interface presents three distinct features: trusted devices, trusted face, and trusted places. These can be implemented individually, in combination, or all simultaneously.

While an unlimited number of trusted devices can be registered, the trusted face feature is limited to a single setup.

  • Trusted Devices: Allows your phone to remain unlocked when connected to specific Bluetooth devices.
  • Trusted Face: Unlocks your phone when it recognizes your face.
  • Trusted Places: Keeps your phone unlocked when you are in designated locations.

Smart Lock enhances convenience by automatically unlocking your device under pre-defined conditions.

The Convenience of Automatic Unlocking at Trusted Locations

A significant benefit of Android’s Smart Lock feature is the ability to designate unlimited trusted places. This is a particularly useful aspect, and we will explore it in detail.

Selecting "Trusted places" allows you to activate locations defined within Google Maps, or to create custom locations for automatic unlocking.

Adding a custom place will initially center on your current location, offering immediate addition. Alternatively, you can search for a specific address or location to add it to your trusted places. It’s crucial to remember that this functionality is dependent on the Google Location service, and enabling GPS will enhance the precision of custom place recognition.

The screenshot below demonstrates the possibility of defining a large geographical area, such as the entire San Antonio metro area, as a trusted place. However, it is advisable to add smaller, more focused areas to avoid compromising your device’s security, like a particular business or residence.

In this instance, we have designated our primary home location as a trusted place.

You can easily add multiple trusted places that you visit frequently. Once you enter the range of a designated trusted place, Smart Lock will automatically activate.

Don't forget that you can also integrate your Home and Work locations from Google Maps. To do so, you must first configure these locations within the Maps application by swiping in from the left edge of the screen and selecting "Settings."

You can then easily enable or disable your work and home addresses within Smart Lock by toggling the corresponding green button.

Configuring and Utilizing Device Smart Lock

To establish a trusted device, such as through Bluetooth connectivity, initial pairing within the Android Bluetooth settings is required.

Should you already possess paired devices, selecting the "add trusted device" option becomes available.

As illustrated, with several devices already paired, any of these can be selected.

Upon connection to one of these devices, the Smart Lock functionality will be automatically activated.

Finally, Smart Lock provides Android Lollipop users with an enhanced feature.

This is a more sophisticated iteration of the face unlock capability present in earlier Android versions.

Facial Recognition for Convenient Unlocking

Implementing a trusted face feature functions similarly to earlier face unlock capabilities, though it’s designed to be a more streamlined experience. It isn’t intended to serve as the primary security measure for your device.

To register your face as a trusted identifier, select the "Trusted face" option within the Smart Lock settings. The initial screen provides a disclaimer, noting that facial unlocks are less secure than other methods, as someone with a similar appearance could potentially gain access.

Proceed by tapping "Set up" when you are prepared.

Optimal lighting is crucial during setup – avoid excessively bright or dim environments. Ensure the device is held at eye level.

Confirm your readiness by clicking "Next."

An orange-dotted outline will then appear on the screen. Position your face within these boundaries; the dots will turn green as Android scans and records your facial data.

Upon completion, select "Next" to finalize the process.

If the device isn’t recognized as being in a trusted location or connected to a trusted device, the following icon will be displayed on the lock screen. This indicates that the device can be unlocked simply by looking at it.

A successful scan will result in the icon changing to an unlocked state, allowing you to swipe to access your device.

To re-enable conventional security measures, tap the unlock icon, which will revert to a locked state. Unlocking will then require your usual method – PIN, password, or pattern.

If facial unlocking proves unreliable in varying light conditions, revisit the Smart Lock settings and tap "trusted face" to refine face matching or restart the setup process.

Smart Lock represents a significant and welcome addition to Android’s security features.

The ability to automatically unlock your phone or tablet in designated locations or when connected to trusted devices eliminates repetitive locking throughout the day. Furthermore, the trusted face functionality performs admirably. During testing, a 2013 Nexus 7 consistently unlocked almost instantaneously upon activation and facial recognition.

One potential limitation is the reliance on Google Maps-based locations for trusted places. The inclusion of WiFi access point recognition would be a beneficial enhancement, but currently, third-party software is required.
