Running Multiple Firefox Profiles Simultaneously
It is possible to operate several Firefox profiles concurrently. This functionality proves particularly beneficial for streamlined extension testing, establishing a dedicated web development environment, or maintaining a lightweight profile specifically for applications like Gmail. Alternatively, it allows for a completely fresh browsing experience.
Creating a New Profile
The initial step involves the creation of a new Firefox profile. This is achieved by executing a specific command through either the Run dialog or a command prompt. Adjust the file path as needed to match your system's installation directory.
C:\Program Files\Mozilla Firefox\firefox.exe -profilemanager
Utilize the Create Profile wizard to establish the additional profile. Ensure each profile receives a unique and easily identifiable name. It is also recommended to select the "Don't ask at startup" option for convenience.
Configuring Shortcuts for Each Profile
To launch each profile independently, create a separate shortcut to Firefox. Duplicating the existing shortcut is a simple method. Subsequently, access the shortcut's properties and navigate to the Shortcut tab.
Append the following string to the end of the Target field. Replace "Geek" with the actual name assigned to your profile.
-P PROFILENAME -no-remote
For the second shortcut, which should be given a descriptive name, repeat the process. However, substitute the profile name corresponding to the secondary profile. The inclusion of the "-no-remote" option is crucial.
Launching and Utilizing Profiles
With these configured shortcuts, you can now launch distinct Firefox windows, each associated with its designated profile. Extensions, bookmarks, and themes are isolated to their respective profiles. A newly created profile will always begin with default settings.
Please note that this method is designed for use with Firefox version 2.0 or later. Updating to a compatible version is advised if you are currently running an older release.
