Global Health Tech VC Investment: A Shifting Landscape

Recent research indicates that the United States currently dominates global health tech VC investment. Between 2016 and the year-to-date in 2021, the U.S. has secured $31.9 billion in venture capital funding.

China follows as the second-largest recipient of this investment, having attracted $4.1 billion during the same period. The United Kingdom ranks third, with a total of $3.8 billion in VC investment.

Significant Growth in the U.K.

Notably, the U.K.'s health tech investment has experienced substantial growth. Rising from $420 million in 2016, it has increased ninefold. In comparison, U.S. investment has grown by a factor of 3.4 over the same timeframe.

The majority of funding for U.S.-based health tech companies remains focused in key innovation hubs. These include the Bay Area, New York City, and Boston.

A More Distributed Investment Pattern

However, recent trends suggest a broadening of investment distribution. Over the past two years, funding has become less concentrated in the U.S. and China, according to findings released by Dealroom.co for London & Partners.

The Rise of Europe

Europe is currently experiencing the most rapid growth in the health tech sector globally. European startups in this field raised $8.1 billion in 2021.

This represents a significant increase from the $1.7 billion raised in 2016, demonstrating a growth rate of 4.9 times.

The "Golden Triangle" and European Innovation

The U.K.'s health tech expansion has historically been fueled by the “Golden Triangle.” This region encompasses London, Oxford, and Cambridge.

This area is particularly strong in academic research, being home to five universities ranked within the top 25 globally for life sciences and medicine.

For context, North America’s growth rate was 3.5x, while Asia experienced a 3.7x increase during the same period.
