United Airlines and Boom Supersonic: A New Era of Commercial Flight

United Airlines has become the inaugural U.S. customer for Boom Supersonic, a company dedicated to reviving supersonic commercial air travel.

Last year saw the unveiling of Boom’s sub-scale testing aircraft. The company plans to initiate production of the full-scale Overture passenger jet in 2025.

Commercial service for the Overture is currently projected to commence in 2029, following a period of flight testing, design enhancements, and necessary qualification procedures.

Overture Aircraft Purchase Agreement

United has committed to purchasing 15 Overture aircraft, contingent upon their adherence to the airline’s stringent standards for safety, operational performance, and sustainability.

Furthermore, the agreement incorporates an option for United to acquire an additional 35 aircraft following the initial purchase.

The airline is keenly interested in the potential of supersonic flight to halve travel durations, while simultaneously enhancing its commitment to environmental responsibility.

Sustainability and Fuel Initiatives

Boom Supersonic is striving to be the first commercial aircraft manufacturer to operate with a net-zero carbon footprint from its inception.

A central focus is the sourcing and utilization of 100% sustainable aviation fuel (SAF).

The collaboration between United and Boom includes joint efforts to refine and expand the production capacity for this crucial sustainable fuel source.

Alignment with Net-Zero Emissions Goals

U.S. airlines have collectively pledged to achieve net-zero carbon emissions by 2050.

This commitment involves partnerships with governmental bodies and other stakeholders to expedite the development and widespread adoption of sustainable aviation fuel.

Consequently, this partnership with Boom is anticipated to be a significant catalyst in realizing United’s long-term sustainability objectives.
