According to a report by Bloomberg, Rao indicated that this represents an initial portion of a larger funding target, potentially reaching up to $1 billion overall.
Previous Reporting and Funding Goals
TechCrunch initially reported in October regarding Unconventional AI’s pursuit of substantial funding.
While the ultimate valuation is slightly below the initially anticipated $5 billion, the potential for a $1 billion total raise remains a key factor in the company’s future valuation.
Focus on Energy-Efficient AI Computing
Unconventional AI is dedicated to the development of a novel computer architecture designed specifically for AI workloads, prioritizing energy efficiency.
Rao articulated on X (formerly Twitter) his ambition to engineer a computer system that achieves an efficiency level comparable to that of biological systems.
Naveen Rao’s Background
Prior to founding Unconventional AI, Rao’s previous startup, MosaicML, was acquired by Databricks in 2023 for $1.3 billion.
Before MosaicML, Rao was a co-founder of Nervana Systems, a machine learning platform that was acquired by Intel Corporation in 2016 for a reported sum exceeding $400 million.
