Causal Raises $4.2M to Replace Excel with Modern App

Causal Secures $4.2 Million Seed Funding to Reimagine Business Modeling
Traditional spreadsheet software like Excel and Google Sheets possess limitations when it comes to advanced data analysis. A recently funded U.K.-based startup, Causal, is aiming to overcome these challenges. The company has successfully closed a $4.2 million seed round, spearheaded by Accel.
Investment Details and Future Plans
This funding round saw participation from existing investors including Coatue, Passion Capital, Verissimo Ventures, Naval Ravikant, and Varadh Jain. With this new investment, Causal’s total funding now reaches $5.5 million.
The acquired capital will be strategically allocated to expand the engineering team and facilitate the launch of the platform on Product Hunt next month.
Addressing the Limitations of Spreadsheets
While spreadsheets remain essential for many business functions, their application across diverse teams – such as sales and finance – often presents unique hurdles. Causal intends to provide a more collaborative and data-centric solution to these issues.
A New Approach to Formulas
Established in 2019 by Taimur Abdaal and Lukas Köbis, Causal aspires to supersede Excel by refining its core component: formulas. The platform’s formulas are designed to be easily understood, resembling natural language, for example, “Profit = Revenue – Costs.”
Causal asserts that building equivalent models in Excel typically requires significantly more formulas – approximately 100 times fewer within their system.
Democratizing Business Planning
“Business planning and forecasting should be inclusive of all teams within an organization, but the inherent complexity of spreadsheets often restricts this to finance departments,” stated Taimur Abdaal, CEO and co-founder. “Our goal is to make this process accessible to every knowledge worker with a genuinely horizontal product, and we are thrilled to welcome Accel as a partner in this next stage of our development.”
The Problem with Current Spreadsheet Practices
In a recent discussion, Abdaal explained the impetus behind Causal. “We observed the difficulties associated with working with numbers and spreadsheets. The use of complex formulas, which are often hard to decipher, contributes to a high error rate – around 80% of spreadsheets contain errors.”
He further noted that spreadsheets are frequently disconnected from other essential business tools. Finance teams often dedicate considerable time to manually collecting data from various accounting systems. Causal aims to resolve these challenges.
Currently, the team consists of five engineers, primarily focused on developing a versatile product applicable across all company teams for data analysis. This seed investment will allow the company to build upon existing momentum.
Accel’s Perspective
Seth Pierrepont, partner at Accel, commented: “Many have experienced the difficulties of constructing and maintaining large spreadsheets across multiple teams and data sources. Taimur and Lukas are exceptionally talented, product-driven founders.”
He continued, “They have taken the familiar, intuitive Excel-like interface and enhanced it with data integrations, collaborative features, and advanced visualizations. Furthermore, their expertise in data science and mathematics enables them to offer sophisticated models, empowering all users with enhanced predictive capabilities.”
