UK Launches £500m Funding Package for Diverse Founders

British Business Bank Launches £500 Million Diversity Fund
The British Business Bank (BBB), which is government-owned by the U.K., is establishing a £500 million economic support package. This initiative is designed to bolster diverse and underrepresented fund managers and founders throughout the nation.
Allocation of Funds
A portion of £50 million will be specifically allocated to venture funds led by women. This brings the BBB’s total commitment to supporting female-led ventures to at least £100 million. Furthermore, £400 million will be directed towards supporting a wider range of diverse fund managers.
This substantial investment will also focus on early-stage companies. A key objective is to expand the talent pipeline, offering opportunities for individuals from disadvantaged backgrounds to enter the investment sector.
Investment Goals and Timeline
The BBB stated that this initiative seeks to address the considerable disparity in venture capital investment received by underrepresented founders and investors. At least 50% of the investment is targeted for female fund managers.
Deployment of this economic package is scheduled to begin in 2026.
Supporting the U.K.’s Venture Ecosystem
This announcement aligns with the U.K.’s broader efforts to attract and retain talent within its venture ecosystem. The initiative is presented as a means of “breaking down barriers to opportunity” and driving economic growth.
This forms part of the government’s “Plan for Change,” a comprehensive strategy aimed at stimulating economic expansion across the country.
Challenges in the U.K. Venture Landscape
The U.K.’s venture capital environment can present significant challenges for women and people of color, mirroring issues seen in the U.S. Currently, only approximately 13% of venture teams in the U.K. have women in senior positions.
Funding disparities are also stark. A 2023 report indicated that less than 2% of venture funding goes to Black founders. Additionally, women receive only 2 pence for every £1 invested.
