Uber Freight CEO Lior Ron Joins Self-Driving Startup Waabi as COO

Waabi Appoints Uber Freight CEO Lior Ron as COO
Waabi, a developer of self-driving trucks, has announced the appointment of Lior Ron, formerly CEO of Uber Freight, as its new Chief Operating Officer. This strategic move aims to bolster the company’s commercial scaling efforts as it prepares for the deployment of driverless trucks on public roads later this year.
Leadership Transition at Uber Freight
Alongside this appointment, Rebecca Tinucci, previously instrumental in building Tesla’s charging infrastructure, will assume the role of head of Uber Freight. Mr. Ron will continue to serve as chairman of Uber Freight, ensuring a smooth transition.
Scaling for Commercialization
According to Raquel Urtasun, founder and CEO of Waabi, Ron’s expertise will be pivotal in leading the go-to-market strategy. He will focus on expanding key partnerships and transitioning Waabi from its current phase into large-scale commercialization. Urtasun highlighted Ron’s proven ability to scale a company to $5 billion in revenue, as demonstrated during his tenure at Uber Freight.
A History of Collaboration
Urtasun and Ron share a professional history, having previously co-founded Otto, a self-driving truck company acquired by Uber in 2016. Their paths crossed again at Uber, where Urtasun led the ride-hailing firm’s self-driving research as Chief Scientist from 2017 to 2021.
Synergies with Uber Freight
Uber Freight operates as a digital marketplace connecting shippers and carriers. The company intends to integrate self-driving trucks into its platform through collaborations with companies like Aurora Innovation and Waabi. Ron confirmed that Uber’s partnership with Waabi will remain unaffected by his transition.
Industry Demand for Autonomous Solutions
During his time at Uber Freight, Ron engaged with numerous supply chain leaders and major carriers who expressed significant anticipation for the arrival of self-driving truck technology.
Focus on Leading the Transformation
Ron stated his belief that autonomy represents the most impactful technological advancement of the next decade. He chose to join Waabi because he believes the company is best positioned to spearhead this transformation.
Waabi’s Efficient Approach to Autonomy
Urtasun asserts that Waabi’s “AI-first” methodology allows for more rapid and resource-efficient development of autonomous systems compared to its competitors. This efficiency is particularly crucial in a capital-intensive industry that has witnessed the failure of several startups, including TuSimple and Embark.
Financial Standing and Future Growth
Since its inception in 2021, Waabi has secured $287.7 million in funding, with a substantial $200 million coming from a Series B round in 2024. Urtasun indicated that the company does not anticipate needing further funding to achieve its next growth objectives.
Competition in the Autonomous Trucking Sector
Waabi’s primary competitor is Aurora, which recently launched the first commercial driverless trucking route in the United States. Aurora has raised approximately $3.46 billion through venture capital and its public listing.
The Waabi World Simulator
Waabi has accelerated its commercial pilot programs through the use of Waabi World, a closed-loop simulator. This platform facilitates both virtual testing of the self-driving software and real-time learning. The company has also begun integrating the simulator with real-world driving conditions, simulating challenging scenarios like accidents and construction zones without actual risk.
Progress Towards Driverless Launch
“We reached feature complete at the beginning of the year,” Urtasun explained, “meaning we have all the necessary components to operate without a driver.” The company is now concentrating on final performance enhancements and validation, remaining on track for a driverless launch by the end of the year.
Texas as a Launchpad
The initial launch is planned for Texas, which has emerged as a hub for autonomous freight innovation. Specific routes and launch partners have not yet been disclosed. Waabi is collaborating with Volvo Autonomous Solutions to develop and deploy custom-built autonomous vehicles.
Integrating Technology into Customer Operations
Ron expressed his confidence that Waabi will accelerate the scaling of autonomy. He is particularly enthusiastic about the potential to integrate the technology directly into customers’ operations, potentially eliminating the need for traditional terminals with a direct-to-depot delivery feature.
Delivering a Commercial-Ready Solution
Ron emphasized the company’s commitment to providing a fully commercial-ready solution tailored to meet the specific needs of its customers.
