uber and moderna partner on covid-19 vaccine access and information

Uber and the pharmaceutical firm Moderna have revealed a collaborative effort focused on COVID-19 vaccination, encompassing a variety of planned activities. Initially, the confirmed aspect of this partnership involves delivering trustworthy, evidence-based details regarding the safety of COVID-19 vaccines to Uber app users. However, the companies are also exploring further “possibilities,” such as incorporating ride scheduling through Uber directly into the process of booking immunization appointments.

The U.S. COVID-19 vaccination initiative, though recently launched, is already facing obstacles, notably ensuring prompt vaccine availability for the populations with the greatest need. The program must also address the widespread dissemination of inaccurate information concerning vaccine safety on social media platforms. Any application with a broad reach like Uber presents an opportunity to share constructive messaging and precise information with a large audience, which is a positive development in itself.

A significant hurdle to a successful vaccination rollout continues to be logistical in nature. Arranging initial and subsequent appointments for the Moderna vaccine, including the required second dose, proves more difficult than anticipated. I consulted with Ramin Bastani, CEO of Healthvana, regarding their collaboration with LA County to develop an immunization record compatible with Apple Wallet, offering patients prompt information and appointment reminders. However, integrating a ride-hailing service or appointment notifications directly within the Uber app – which many users already possess – could be another highly effective strategy for improving completion rates for both initial and booster vaccinations.

Uber has previously provided complimentary and reduced-cost rides to minimize barriers to vaccine access. A deeper, product-level integration could achieve even more by offering convenient, intuitive access. As previously stated, this remains one of the options under consideration, but a public commitment from Uber and Moderna indicates a genuine intent to discover a viable solution. We will continue to monitor their advancements as this partnership evolves.
