Twitter Super Follows vs. Substack & Patreon - Creator Subscriptions

Twitter's Ambitious Year and New Revenue Streams
Twitter has demonstrated increased ambition throughout the past year. Following pressure from activist shareholders who sought the removal of CEO Jack Dorsey, the company has initiated crucial product developments.
These developments include strategic acquisitions and efforts to expand its revenue generation capabilities. The results are evident in the company’s financial performance, with its share price reaching a record high – twice its value from 2020.
Introducing "Super Follow": A Creator Subscription
The company unveiled preliminary information regarding its inaugural paid feature, Super Follow, during its Analyst Day event on Thursday. This feature aims to integrate elements from various popular platforms.
It seeks to combine the community focus of Discord, the newsletter model of Substack, the audio-based interactions of Clubhouse, and the creator support systems of Patreon into a unified creator subscription service.
Currently, a definitive launch date for this feature remains unspecified, and many details are still being finalized.
Super Follow Feature Details
Twitter showcased screenshots illustrating a system where users can subscribe to their preferred creators for a recurring monthly fee. One screenshot indicated a potential cost of $4.99 per month.
Subscribers will gain access to exclusive benefits, such as exclusive content, subscriber-only newsletters, dedicated community access, special deals and discounts, and a visible supporter badge.
Creators participating in the program will also have the ability to restrict access to certain content, including tweets, Fleets, and conversations within Twitter Spaces, to paying subscribers.
Additional Announcements: Communities and Safety Mode
Alongside Super Follow, Twitter announced “Communities,” a feature designed to rival Facebook Groups. This product will likely serve as a hub for interaction between creators and their Super Follow subscribers.
Furthermore, the company shared details about a “safety mode” intended to automatically block and mute accounts exhibiting abusive behavior.
Potential Impact on Twitter's Ecosystem
The introduction of paywalls within the Twitter platform could fundamentally alter how the service operates. Twitter has historically been cautious when implementing features targeted at specific user groups.
However, creator-centric features on a platform already populated by numerous content creators could pose a significant challenge to existing services like Patreon, which emerged due to limited monetization options on major social networks.
Revenue Goals and Future Outlook
The development of new revenue streams is crucial to Twitter’s objective of doubling its revenue by 2023. This ambitious goal necessitates innovative approaches to monetization.
