Twitter implemented a new measure concerning President Trump’s account on Wednesday, displaying a prominent, pop-up warning on his most recent post regarding the developing events at Capitol Hill. The platform has limited the tweet’s reach, citing a potential for inciting violence.

The president’s latest message to his base of committed followers arrived in a video format, following an earlier post where he urged the group to remain “peaceful.” Within the video, Trump acknowledged his supporters’ deeply held, conspiracy-based beliefs while also suggesting they depart the area.

“I understand your frustration. I recognize your disappointment. We experienced an election that we believe was unfairly decided against us. It was a decisive victory, and many people agree. However, you must now return home,” Trump stated. “Go home, we support you. You are incredibly important.”

A group of passionate Trump supporters entered the U.S. Capitol building in Washington, D.C. on Wednesday, gaining access to congressional halls and even the office of House Speaker Nancy Pelosi. This action, linked to the “Stop the Steal” campaign that Trump has frequently promoted, occurred while Congress was in the process of validating President-elect Joe Biden’s victory.

Previously, Twitter had obscured the president’s posts that violated its rules, attached warning labels, and reduced their visibility. However, the large pop-up warning represents a new enforcement tactic from the company. Twitter announced today that it would “[investigate] further, more serious enforcement measures” given the circumstances at the Capitol. It remains unclear whether the pop-up is visible to all users, and the company has been contacted for clarification regarding this escalated action.

“Regarding the current situation in Washington, DC, Twitter’s Trust & Safety teams are dedicated to maintaining a safe public conversation on the service and will address any content that breaks the Twitter Rules,” a Twitter representative explained. “To be explicit: Expressions of violence and incitements to violence are unacceptable on Twitter, and we will uphold our policies accordingly.”

Update: Following the restriction of the video, Twitter further limited another post by Trump expressing his belief that a “sacred landslide election” was being “taken away from loyal citizens.”
