Timeline Movie Maker - Turn Your Life Into A Film

Facebook Timeline: A Shift in Profile Presentation
The introduction of Facebook’s Timeline profiles sparked considerable debate. Opinions varied widely, with some users embracing the redesigned, visually-rich format while others expressed concerns regarding privacy implications.
Regardless of initial reactions, most users encountered the introductory Timeline promotional video in September. Even those initially critical of the change often found themselves emotionally engaged by its presentation.
Creating Personalized Timeline Movies
Responding to the positive reception of the introductory video, Facebook collaborated with the marketing agency Definition 6 to develop a tool for users to generate their own personalized Timeline movies.
This project, known as Timeline Movie Maker, empowered individuals to craft cinematic representations of their Facebook history. The resulting user-created movies proved to be remarkably engaging and well-received.
The tool allowed for a unique and compelling way to revisit past posts and experiences. It transformed a user’s Timeline into a dynamic, shareable story.
Impact and User Response
The availability of Timeline Movie Maker provided a creative outlet for Facebook users. It allowed them to curate and present their online lives in a novel and visually appealing manner.
While the original link [NO LONGER WORKS] is no longer functional, the impact of the tool remains significant. It demonstrated Facebook’s willingness to experiment with new ways to engage its user base.
The project highlighted the power of visual storytelling and the desire for users to control the narrative of their online presence.
Creating a Personalized Timeline Movie
Even for those initially doubtful, and regardless of personal opinions regarding the Timeline platform itself, the resulting movie generated is likely to be enjoyable. Begin by navigating to the Timeline Movie Maker website and selecting the “Make Your Movie” option.

Access to your Facebook account will be required, prompting a login if you are not already connected. The application will then request permissions to operate within your Facebook profile. Notably, this app differs from many others by not seeking authorization to post directly to your wall.
However, access to your personal details, posts, and images is necessary for the movie creation process. These permissions can be revoked later through your Facebook privacy settings if desired.
Following successful login, the application initiates movie generation, displaying a series of engaging messages during its operation.

The creation process is generally swift. Should the process appear prolonged, verify that your Flash plugin is enabled. In some instances, like my own, the progress indicator may stall without displaying an error message until Flash is activated.
Reliving Your Experiences: The Facebook Timeline Movie
The moment has arrived to view the automatically generated movie of your life, as represented on Facebook. Should the resulting presentation fail to capture your interest or appear even mildly engaging, we encourage you to pause viewing at this point.
This feature compiles a visual narrative of your activity on the platform, beginning with your initial registration and extending to the present day, or as far back as your Timeline information extends.
Key Elements of the Movie
- Photos and Albums: The movie prominently features selections from your uploaded photos and albums.
- Profile Information: Your profile picture, name, and relationship status are integrated into the presentation.
- Soundtrack: A familiar musical score, reminiscent of the original Timeline experience, accompanies the visuals.
The presentation dynamically scans through your past posts and interactions, creating a personalized retrospective.
The movie culminates in a rapid-paced sequence traversing your Timeline. It ultimately focuses on your current profile picture and cover photo.
Many users, upon initial viewing, have expressed positive surprise with the quality and emotional resonance of this automatically created movie. The results often exceed initial expectations.
Personalizing Your Life's Film
While extensive modification isn't available, several adjustments can be made to your created movie. Initially, the option to share your film is presented.

However, a limitation exists regarding sharing options. Currently, the movie can only be shared via Facebook. This explains why a direct link within this article isn’t possible. Downloading, embedding, or utilizing other sharing methods are not supported. This restriction may stem from Facebook’s concerns about Timeline copyright, though broader sharing capabilities would likely be beneficial.

Moving beyond this constraint, some customization of the movie itself is possible. Five distinct soundtracks are available for selection: Original (the default setting), Nostalgic, Cinematic, Romantic, and Playful. These soundtracks are all variations of the core musical theme.
Short previews of each soundtrack can be previewed. Alternatively, you can apply each soundtrack to the entire movie to determine the most suitable accompaniment.

The photos incorporated into the movie can also be adjusted. Selecting a specific photo allows for its replacement with another.
It’s important to note that photos cannot be rearranged by dragging and dropping. Furthermore, clicking on a photo may only cycle through a limited number of alternatives, rather than providing a full selection. However, this feature allows for the correction of any undesirable images featured in the film.

Once you are satisfied with your changes, clicking the “Remake Your Movie” button will generate the updated version.
The Current Limitations of Facebook Timeline Movies
The present functionality of Facebook's Timeline movies is constrained by its limited sharing options. Confining distribution to Facebook itself restricts the feature’s potential and keeps it from becoming truly impactful.
Despite being visually appealing, the current implementation functions primarily as a novelty.
Expanding Sharing Capabilities is Key
Allowing users to disseminate these automatically generated movies across the wider web would significantly enhance their value. This broader sharing capability would provide individuals with a compelling medium for self-expression.
Utilizing these visually engaging movies as a means of personal representation is likely to be well-received, and Facebook is unlikely to experience any negative consequences from such a change.
