Repurpose Your Old iPad: Family Album or Business Portfolio

Repurposing an Older iPad: A Dedicated Media Solution
Following an upgrade to the iPad Mini, it became apparent that my original 16GB iPad 1 would not be utilized in the same manner as it had been for the preceding two years.
Rather than selling the device, a decision was made to transform it into a dedicated family media album.
This new role allows for the storage of a comprehensive collection of family photos, videos, and curated song playlists for ambient background music.
Maximizing Value Beyond Resale
Although the iPad 1 could potentially be sold for between $150 and $200, it was determined that greater value could be derived from its repurposing as a digital archive and display for cherished family memories.
Alternatively, such a device is also well-suited to function as a dedicated business portfolio, readily available for client presentations.
Transforming Your iPad into a Media Hub
This article details the process of optimizing your iPad for use as a dedicated media device, including removing extraneous content and streamlining its functionality.
Notably, even the iPad 1, despite lacking support for iOS 6, maintains compatibility with Apple TV.
This compatibility enables the device to be conveniently positioned near a television for on-demand presentation purposes.
Steps for Dedicated Media Device Setup
- Remove all unused applications.
- Delete unnecessary files and data.
- Organize photos and videos into easily accessible albums.
- Create relevant music playlists.
- Configure Apple TV integration for seamless display.
By following these steps, an older iPad can be effectively transformed into a valuable and versatile media solution.
Backing Up Your iPad Data
Initially, it is advisable to create a backup of the existing data on your older iPad. If you’ve consistently utilized wireless synchronization, establishing a direct connection between your iPad and iTunes is recommended.
Within iTunes, locate your old iPad in the source panel, then right-click and choose the "Backup" option. This action safeguards your data.
Creating this backup allows for the restoration of your old iPad’s content should the need arise. Furthermore, content can also be restored to your newly upgraded iPad from this backup.
Removing Unnecessary Applications
Following a successful backup, proceed to remove applications that are not frequently used. This can be accomplished either through iTunes or directly on the iPad itself.
Navigating to Settings > General > Storage and selecting apps individually is often the most efficient method for deleting a large number of applications.
For the purpose of transforming my iPad into a dedicated family media album, I prioritized retaining applications related to photography and video editing.
A selection of magazine and gaming applications were also kept, alongside the Dropbox app for cloud document access. The Netflix and Amazon Instant Video apps were retained for streaming movies.
The primary objective was to maximize available storage space for photos and videos, streamlining the iPad’s functionality.
Populating Your Device with Media
Begin by navigating to the Photo section within iTunes. From there, you can choose the iPhoto albums, Events, and Faces you wish to synchronize to your device.
Consider incorporating several smart folders as well. These folders will dynamically update on your device whenever you modify your iPhoto library on your Mac, ensuring your content remains current.
Media Selection Considerations
Similar choices should be made regarding family movies and TV shows that you intend to store on the device.
The specific selections you make will be determined by your individual requirements and how you plan to utilize the media library.
Repurposing an Older iPad
Given that your previous iPad may not be utilized on a daily basis, it's beneficial to deactivate applications and services that aren't required. For instance, within Settings > iCloud, options like Mail, Calendars, Notes, and Reminders can be disabled.
As the iPad is being repurposed as a media display, all applications were removed from the primary screen. This ensures a single family photograph is prominently displayed for viewing.
A selection of applications, including Photos, Videos, and Instant Video, were placed in the dock for occasional use. The primary objective is to minimize clutter and transform the iPad into a digital equivalent of a conventional photo album, facilitating easy access and viewing of content.
Optimizing for Media Display
- Deactivate unnecessary apps and services via iCloud Settings.
- Remove apps from the home screen for a cleaner presentation.
- Dock frequently used media apps for quick access.
The intention is to create a streamlined experience, resembling a physical photo album in its simplicity and ease of use. This allows for effortless browsing and enjoyment of your media.
Utilizing Your iPad as a Digital Picture Frame
Once your older iPad has been thoroughly cleaned, it can be repurposed as a dedicated digital picture frame for sharing photos with loved ones. The Picture Frame feature, which presents an animated slideshow, functions while the iPad is in Lock mode.
Activation is simple: tap the Picture Frame icon located in the bottom right corner of the iPad’s screen. The selected images will then cycle continuously until the device is unlocked.

Configuring the Picture Frame Feature
To configure Picture Frame, navigate to Settings > Picture Frame. Here, you can choose the photos you wish to include in the slideshow.
Further customization options are available, allowing you to define the style of photo transitions and the duration each photo, or set of photos in Origami style, is displayed.

Similar slideshow settings can also be applied to individual albums directly within the iPad’s Photos application.

Extending the Life of Your Original iPad
Although Apple has ceased official support for the original iPad, aside from individual app updates, the device remains remarkably capable for media consumption.
Therefore, instead of discarding it, consider utilizing it as a dedicated platform for archiving and showcasing your cherished memories.
