Monica Sarbu and the Founding of Tupu.io

Monica Sarbu, the co-founder and CEO of Xata.io, possesses over 15 years of professional experience within the technology sector. Throughout her career, she observed a recurring challenge: the difficulty faced by women and individuals from historically underrepresented groups in navigating corporate structures. Having personally lacked a mentor during her own career progression, she resolved to create a solution to aid others in the tech industry.

The Genesis of a Mentorship Program

Initially, Sarbu contemplated authoring a book on career advancement. However, she determined that generalized advice often proves insufficient, as effective guidance requires personalization to address individual circumstances. “My vision was to establish a mentorship initiative that would deliver tailored solutions to meet each person’s unique requirements,” she explained, “because typically, individuals seek mentorship when confronting a specific problem.”

She identified that these challenges generally fall into two primary categories: interpersonal conflicts within the workplace or feelings of career stagnation accompanied by discouragement and imposter syndrome. It was with this understanding that the concept for Tupu.io began to take shape.

Addressing Gender Imbalance in Engineering

Data from Zippia.com reveals a significant gender disparity in engineering roles, with women holding only 25% of positions. This translates to an average ratio of three men to one woman, and the imbalance is frequently even more pronounced. Such disparities can, at times, contribute to unfavorable work environments, regardless of intent.

“There are numerous steps technical companies can take to foster healthier and more inclusive environments,” Sarbu stated. “Ultimately, a company’s culture is a major determinant of employee satisfaction and retention.”

Raising Awareness Through Public Speaking

Sarbu has consistently engaged in public speaking, initially at conferences geared towards women, and subsequently at broader industry events. Her presentations aimed to convey the experience of being a woman within predominantly male organizations. These engagements successfully raised awareness and fostered empathy among diverse audiences.

“I often began my talks by asking the audience to consider the perspective of a woman working in a male-dominated tech company,” Sarbu recounted. “Then, I would attempt to illustrate the emotional landscape of that experience.”

The positive reception from male attendees, many of whom had not previously considered these challenges, solidified her desire to enact more substantial change, further fueling the development of Tupu.io.

A Unique Approach to Mentorship

Most mentorship programs operate on a fee-for-service basis, typically catering to high-potential employees who may benefit least from such support. Sarbu envisioned a different model: a free service funded through her own resources and, eventually, corporate donations. This approach would enable a broader reach, connecting mentors with individuals who genuinely require guidance.

“Our future strategy involves partnering with tech companies of all sizes to bolster diversity within their organizations by providing mentorship opportunities to their employees,” she explained. “Companies will be encouraged to offer Tupu.io to all employees, both as mentees and mentors, rather than restricting access to a select few.”

Current Status and Future Plans

Currently, Tupu.io boasts 57 mentees and 128 mentors, comprising both men and women with experience in the tech industry. The platform has achieved this growth organically, with minimal marketing or advertising.

While simultaneously leading Xata.io, a startup focused on serverless databases for the Jamstack architecture, Sarbu aims to establish Tupu.io as a self-sustaining entity through corporate contributions. Ongoing development efforts are focused on automating the mentor-mentee matching process and streamlining the user experience, with a revamped platform expected to launch shortly.

Tupu.io represents a commitment to fostering inclusivity and providing equitable access to mentorship within the technology sector.
