Trump Administration to End Energy Star Program - Savings at Risk

The Potential Restructuring of the Energy Star Program
The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency’s (EPA) Energy Star program has, over many years, facilitated substantial savings for consumers – a total of $40 billion annually in energy expenditures. Recent reports from CNN indicate that the current administration is considering a reduction in the program’s scope.
Understanding the Energy Star Initiative
Energy Star operates as a collaborative effort between the public and private sectors, with a budget of $32 million. It partners with manufacturers of appliances and electronic devices.
The program’s primary function is to certify products that meet stringent energy efficiency standards. It also assists consumers in locating rebates, thereby reducing the initial purchase price of these efficient products.
Concerns Regarding Potential Changes
Paula Glover, president of the Alliance to Save Energy, a non-profit organization, expressed concern that eliminating Energy Star would be inconsistent with the administration’s stated goal of lowering energy costs for households.
Glover highlighted the program’s impressive return on investment, stating that for every dollar invested, it delivers $350 in savings.
A History of Bipartisan Support
Energy Star was initially established in 1992 during the presidency of George H.W. Bush.
Subsequent reauthorization occurred in 2005 under George W. Bush, assigning program oversight to both the EPA and the Department of Energy.
The Impact of Energy Star Labels
The program is easily recognizable by its distinctive yellow labels, prominently displayed on appliances and electronics across the United States.
These labels provide consumers with clear information regarding estimated annual energy consumption costs for typical usage scenarios.
Financial Benefits for Households
On average, U.S. households benefit from approximately $450 in annual savings on their energy bills thanks to Energy Star certified products.
