Windows Home Server Toolkit Connection Troubleshooting

Diagnosing Connection Issues with the Windows Home Server Toolkit
If you are encountering difficulties with slow or absent connections to your Windows Home Server, utilizing the Windows Home Server Toolkit can be a valuable step in identifying the root cause of these problems. This article details how the toolkit functions and assists in restoring your connections.
Windows Home Server Toolkit Installation
The WHS Toolkit is a user-friendly utility designed to pinpoint the source of connection failures between computers and your home server. Begin by downloading and installing the toolkit on any network machine experiencing connectivity issues.
During testing, we installed the toolkit on a Windows 7 system. Following installation, it appears within the Start menu. The initial step involves publishing the add-in to the Home Server itself.

Upon successful transfer, a notification will appear, indicating the need for installation on the Home Server.

Access the Home Server Console, navigate to Add-ins, select the 'Available' tab on the right-hand side, and then initiate the Install process.

A confirmation message will be displayed, signaling a successful installation and the subsequent closure of the WHS Console.

The WHS Console will close, potentially displaying an error message regarding lost connectivity. This behavior is expected; simply acknowledge it by clicking 'Ok'.

Employing the Connector Troubleshooter
You can now leverage the toolkit to diagnose network problems. Locate and launch the Connector Troubleshooter by going to Start > All Programs > Windows Home Server Toolkit.

The troubleshooter collects system data and attempts to identify connection issues. It does not alter any settings on your computer, but rather assists in detecting problems and suggesting potential solutions.

Upon completion, a report will open in your web browser, highlighting any detected issues. This report may suggest installing a driver or software update, referencing a Knowledgebase article, or recommending Windows Updates, among other solutions.

In some instances, you may be prompted to submit these logs to technical support, copy them to the server, or explore other options. These actions can be managed within the WHS Console under 'Home server support tools'.

As an example, we transferred the log files to the server.

Advanced Mode Operation
While the standard method is straightforward and suitable for most users, Advanced Mode is also available. This mode reveals the individual tests performed by the troubleshooter, providing a more detailed understanding of potential problems. To activate Advanced Mode, navigate to Start > Run, type 'cmd', and press Enter.

Within the Command Prompt, enter the following command:
cd /d "%ProgramFiles%\Windows Home Server\Toolkit"
Then, at the subsequent prompt, type:
ConnectorTroubleshooter.exe – a

The troubleshooter will launch in Advanced Mode. Click 'Run All Tests', enter the server password, and access detailed information regarding each test conducted.

This functionality can aid in resolving connection problems and preparing comprehensive error reports for technical support. The toolkit is compatible with systems running Windows XP SP2 and later. Whether you are a novice or an experienced user, this toolkit can prove invaluable when troubleshooting connections to your home server.
