Toyota Explores Rocket Technology for Future Mobility

Toyota Chairman Akio Toyoda revealed the company is investigating the potential of rocket technology during his presentation at CES 2025 on Monday. This exploration includes considering the possibility of facilitating human transport beyond Earth.

The "Invention by Multiplication" Philosophy

Toyoda’s announcement regarding rocketry occurred while he was detailing his vision of the company’s technologies as “invention by kakezan,” which translates to “invention by multiplication.” This concept emphasizes the power of collaborative innovation.

He stated that collaborative efforts have limitless potential, adding, “And speaking of the sky, we’re exploring rockets, too.”

Expanding Mobility Beyond Earth

Toyoda clarified that the future of mobility should not be confined to terrestrial vehicles or limited to a single automotive manufacturer. This statement is widely interpreted as a subtle reference to Tesla and its CEO, Elon Musk, who also leads SpaceX.

Collaboration with Interstellar Technologies

Initially, details were scarce, but Toyoda showcased a rocket design created by Interstellar Technologies, a Japanese spaceflight company. They are focused on developing a small launch vehicle for deploying satellites.

Following the conference, executives explained that Toyota is partnering with Interstellar Technologies to determine the optimal telecommunications network needed to support Woven City.

Woven City and Communication Infrastructure

Woven City, a 175-acre prototype city situated at the base of Mount Fuji, is designed as a real-world testing ground for future technologies. Toyota initially announced plans for this innovative city in 2020, and the first phase has now opened.

Hajime Kumabe, CEO of Woven by Toyota, emphasized the necessity of reliable communication for constantly moving vehicles. He stated the need for uninterrupted and seamless connectivity.

Addressing Challenges in Mountainous Terrain

The location of Woven City, characterized by mountainous terrain, presents unique challenges for establishing a robust communication network. This necessitates exploration of appropriate infrastructure to support autonomous vehicles effectively.

Investment in Space Technology

Executives confirmed that Woven by Toyota has invested 7 billion yen, equivalent to approximately $44.3 million, into Interstellar Technologies. This investment underscores the company’s commitment to exploring space-related technologies.

Precedent for Unexpected Announcements

This announcement follows a similar pattern observed with Sony, which unexpectedly revealed its work on an electric vehicle at CES five years ago, dedicating only a brief portion of its presentation to the news.

A Shift in Automotive Strategy

Toyota has faced criticism for its cautious approach to electric vehicle development. However, this strategy now appears forward-thinking as other automakers reassess their ambitious electrification plans. It’s possible Toyota’s focus has been directed towards a more ambitious goal – space exploration.
