Tinder Facial Recognition: California Users Required to Verify Profiles

Tinder Implements Facial Recognition for New California Users
According to a report by Axios published on Monday, Tinder is now mandating the use of facial recognition technology for profile verification among new users in California.
This new feature, termed “Face Check,” is designed to mitigate the issue of impersonation on the dating platform.
Reducing Bots and Fake Accounts
The primary goal of Face Check is to ensure users are connecting with genuine individuals, rather than automated bots or fraudulent profiles.
During the signup process, users are prompted to record a brief video selfie.
How Face Check Works
The system then analyzes this video to confirm the user’s authenticity.
It also verifies consistency between the user’s face and the photos included in their profile.
Furthermore, the technology identifies instances where the same facial image is associated with multiple accounts, as reported by Axios.
Verification and Data Handling
Successful completion of the Face Check results in the display of a photo verified badge on the user’s profile.
Tinder has stated that the selfie video itself will be deleted after the scan.
However, an encrypted facial map will be retained to aid in the detection of duplicate profiles going forward.
Existing Implementations
It is important to note that Face Check is not a new initiative for Tinder.
The feature is currently operational in both Colombia and Canada.
Distinction from ID Check
Tinder clarifies that Face Check operates independently from its existing ID Check feature.
ID Check is utilized for verifying a user’s age and identity through the submission of a government-issued identification document.
