Tinder Modes: New Dating Features Explained

Tinder Announces Redesigned Features and New “Modes”
To bolster user retention and enhance overall engagement, Tinder is implementing a significant update to its platform. This involves restructuring existing functionalities into newly designed “modes,” alongside a comprehensive overhaul of the application’s home screen.
Introducing New Dating Modes
Two new modes, Double Date and College Mode, are being introduced. These represent expansions of currently available features, complementing the established “For You” mode which will continue to provide the traditional Tinder experience on the home screen. The company anticipates the addition of further dating modes, tailored to specific interests, relationship goals, and connection preferences.
Double Date Mode: Enhanced Engagement
Launched initially in June, Double Date allows users to connect with a friend and subsequently match with other duos. Following a limited geographical release, this feature is now being deployed worldwide. Data indicates a 25% increase in messages exchanged per match since July, compared to individual conversations.
College Mode: Expanding Student Connections
College Mode evolves from the existing Tinder U feature, first introduced in 2018. Tinder U enabled students to register using their educational email addresses, facilitating connections within their campus communities. Updates last year allowed students to showcase details like graduation year, academic major, extracurricular activities, and fraternity/sorority affiliations. Now, College Mode extends matching possibilities beyond the immediate campus environment.
Responding to User Demand
“Gen Z is actively seeking more relaxed and accessible methods for establishing connections, recognizing that interests and desired connection styles can fluctuate daily,” stated Cleo Long, Senior Director of Global Product Marketing at Tinder. “We’ve listened to our user base, and their priority is finding better matches, rather than simply increasing the quantity of potential connections.”
Match Group Highlights New Features
These new dating modes were discussed during Match Group’s Q2 2025 earnings call last month, signaling the company’s commitment to innovation within the dating app landscape.
Rollout Schedule
The redesign and Double Date feature are currently being rolled out globally. College Mode will become available to eligible users later this fall, providing expanded opportunities for student connections.
