TikTok AI Content Control: Choose How Much You See

TikTok Introduces New Controls for AI-Generated Content

TikTok, initially known as a platform for user-created videos, is now implementing a new feature. This allows users to regulate the amount of AI-generated content (AIGC) displayed within their personalized For You feed.

Alongside this control, the company is also deploying enhanced labeling technologies designed to identify content created using artificial intelligence.

Adjusting Your Content Preferences

The new AIGC control is being integrated into TikTok’s existing Manage Topics section. This tool already enables users to customize the content they encounter on the platform.

As TikTok explained in a recent blog post, “Manage Topics currently allows individuals to adjust the frequency of content related to over ten different categories, such as Dance, Sports, and Food & Drinks.” The AIGC setting functions similarly, providing users with the ability to refine their feed experience without completely eliminating AIGC.

The Rise of AI-Only Feeds

This development occurs as other major tech companies, including OpenAI and Meta, are actively exploring dedicated AI-powered feeds. Meta, for example, launched Vibes in September, a space specifically for sharing and creating short-form, AI-generated videos.

Shortly following Meta’s introduction of Vibes, OpenAI unveiled Sora, a platform focused on the creation and distribution of AI-generated video content.

Since Sora’s release, increasingly realistic AI-generated videos have begun appearing on TikTok. Furthermore, many TikTok users are now utilizing AI tools to enhance visuals for posts covering diverse subjects, including historical events and celebrity profiles.

TikTok states that the new AIGC control empowers users who prefer less AI-generated content to reduce its visibility. Conversely, those who enjoy it can opt to see more.

Users can access this new functionality by navigating to Settings > Content Preferences > Manage Topics. Within this section, a slider allows adjustment of content frequency for various topics, including AI-generated content, thereby controlling its presence in the For You feed.

TikTok confirms that this change will be implemented over the coming weeks.

Enhanced AI Content Labeling

To bolster its ability to accurately identify AI-generated content, TikTok is currently evaluating a technology known as “invisible watermarking.”

TikTok currently mandates labeling of realistic AI-generated content and utilizes Content Credentials from C2PA, a cross-industry standard. This embeds metadata within content, signaling its AI-generated origin to TikTok and other platforms. However, TikTok acknowledges that these labels can be removed during re-uploading or editing processes on different platforms.

The implementation of “invisible watermarks” will add an additional layer of security. This watermark is designed to be detectable only by TikTok, making its removal significantly more difficult.

TikTok will initially apply invisible watermarks to content created using its own AI tools, such as AI Editor Pro. They will also be added to content uploaded with C2PA’s Content Credentials. The company believes these watermarks will improve the reliability of content labeling.

TikTok will continue to support and integrate C2PA’s Content Credentials, adding them to AI-generated content produced on its platform.

Promoting AI Literacy

In conjunction with these efforts, TikTok announced the launch of a $2 million AI literacy fund. This fund will support experts and organizations, such as Girls Who Code, in developing educational content focused on AI literacy and safety.
