Rednote App Issues: TikTok Users Face Problems Switching

TikTok Users Flock to RedNote, Encounter Account Issues
In response to the potential ban of TikTok in the United States, many American users have begun exploring alternative platforms. This has led to a surge in downloads of RedNote, also known as Xiaohongshu, propelling it to the forefront of the U.S. App Store charts on Monday.
Initial Enthusiasm Meets Account Suspension
Despite the initial excitement, a significant number of users transitioning to RedNote have experienced unexpected difficulties. Reports indicate widespread account suspensions and bans occurring for various reasons.
RedNote: More Than Just a TikTok Alternative
RedNote initially appeared to be a viable substitute for TikTok, sharing a similar focus on short-form video content and creator-driven experiences. However, the app’s functionality extends beyond video sharing.
It also functions as a platform for local recommendations and connections, akin to Yelp or Google, particularly within China.
Bans Triggered by Unexpected Factors
Several users, including prominent TikTok personality Bethenny Frankel, have reported facing penalties or outright bans shortly after joining RedNote and posting content.
TikTok Watermarks and Community Guideline Violations
One common reason cited for account suspensions is the presence of the TikTok watermark on videos uploaded to RedNote. This appears to be a violation of the platform’s policies.
Furthermore, many users have received notifications stating their accounts were banned for breaching the Xiaohongshu Community Guidelines.
Verification Issues and Suspected Bot Activity
Difficulties with account verification have also contributed to the problem. Users attempting to verify their accounts with U.S. phone numbers often fail to receive the necessary verification codes.
Repeated attempts to obtain the codes have, in some cases, triggered account suspensions, potentially flagged as suspected bot activity.
Unexplained Suspensions and Language Barriers
In some instances, account suspensions appear to lack a clear explanation. One user reported their account being frozen after posting a simple picture of cinnamon rolls.
Another jokingly suggested they were banned for engaging with popular content. While these claims require independent verification, the volume of complaints suggests a genuine issue.
Navigating the Mandarin-Language Guidelines
A significant challenge for English-speaking users is the fact that the Xiaohongshu Community Guidelines are primarily written in Mandarin.
Although an English language option exists within the app’s settings, locating it can be difficult for those unfamiliar with the interface.
Appeals and the Search for Alternatives
Affected creators are attempting to appeal the bans, but the outcome of these efforts remains uncertain.
Meanwhile, competing platforms are actively seeking to attract former TikTok users. It is anticipated that many creators will gravitate towards apps operated by Meta and Google, due to their established monetization capabilities.
