TikTok Adds AI-Powered Accessibility Features | Social Media Today

TikTok Enhances Accessibility with New Features
TikTok revealed on Wednesday a broadening of its accessibility features. This expansion includes the implementation of AI-generated ALT text for images, a high-contrast display option, and compatibility with user-defined device-level bold text settings.
AI-Powered ALT Text for Images
Previously, TikTok enabled creators to manually add ALT text to their photos. This allowed for descriptive text to be provided, aiding users who utilize screen readers in understanding the visual content through audio descriptions. Now, the platform is trialing AI-generated ALT text.
This new system will automatically generate descriptions for photos when creators haven’t added ALT text themselves. The intention is to improve accessibility for individuals with visual impairments. Instagram has been utilizing similar AI technology for ALT text generation since 2018.
High-Contrast Mode for Improved Visibility
A new high-contrast mode is now available. Users can activate this feature through a “color contrast” option located within the app’s accessibility settings. Activating this mode will intensify the foreground colors of text, icons, and other user interface components.
This adjustment is designed to make TikTok more accessible to users with low vision or those sensitive to low contrast levels. The company emphasizes its commitment to usability for a wider range of viewers.
Device-Level Bold Text Support
TikTok now respects a user’s system-wide bold text preference. If bold text is enabled at the device level, all text within the TikTok application will automatically be displayed in a bolder font. This feature aims to improve readability for users who prefer or require bolder text styles.
“Our belief is that when individuals feel acknowledged, listened to, and supported, they are empowered to share their experiences, create content, and connect with others in a meaningful way,” stated the company in a recent blog post. “Therefore, we are dedicated to continually developing products that cater to everyone.”
The company views accessibility not merely as an obligation, but as a catalyst for innovation and the creation of a more inclusive platform for its global user base.
Expanding the Suite of Accessibility Tools
These new features complement TikTok’s existing accessibility offerings. Current tools include automatically generated captions for videos, dark mode, text-to-speech functionality, and adjustable text sizes throughout the application.
TikTok continues to prioritize inclusivity by providing a range of options to enhance the user experience for individuals with diverse needs.
