TikTok Introduces In-App Guided Meditation

TikTok announced on Thursday the rollout of guided meditation exercises directly within its application. Initial testing of these exercises was conducted with a limited group of teenage users earlier in the year.

The feature’s primary goal is to assist users in enhancing their sleep and to discourage prolonged app usage during late-night hours.

Meditation for Teen Users

For users under 18, the meditation feature will be automatically enabled. If a teenager is actively using the app after 10:00 PM, their personalized For You feed will be paused by a guided meditation designed to promote relaxation before bedtime.

This meditation incorporates a tranquil visual display and soothing music, accompanied by breathing techniques.

Should a teen choose to dismiss the initial prompt and continue browsing, a subsequent full-screen notification will appear, gently reminding them to prioritize sleep.

Enhanced Teen Safety Measures

TikTok has been consistently implementing new safety features for younger users over the past several years. This development addresses growing concerns regarding the app's influence on its adolescent demographic.

The introduction of this meditation feature represents the company’s most recent attempt to address the concerns of legislators.

Meditation for Adult Users

Adult users who wish to utilize the meditation feature can activate it through the app’s Screen Time settings. Simply toggle the “sleep hours” option to enable the feature.

Users can customize the time at which the meditation exercise will be presented each evening.

Mental Health Education Fund

In addition to the new feature, TikTok revealed a commitment to donate $2.3 million in advertising credits.

These credits will be distributed to 31 mental health organizations spanning 19 countries globally, as part of the company’s Mental Health Education Fund.

This donation underscores TikTok’s dedication to supporting mental wellbeing initiatives worldwide.
