TikTok Voice Notes & Images in DMs: New Update!

TikTok Enhances Direct Messaging Capabilities
TikTok is introducing updated functionalities for user interaction through direct messages (DMs), as reported to TechCrunch on Friday. The platform now supports the transmission of voice notes and the sharing of up to nine images or videos within both individual and group conversations.
Expanding Beyond Entertainment
These additions position TikTok as a multifaceted platform, extending beyond mere entertainment to facilitate regular user engagement. The aim is to establish TikTok as a space where users connect consistently, not solely through the exchange of TikTok videos.
Voice Note Functionality
Users are now able to record and dispatch audio messages with a maximum duration of 60 seconds. This feature mirrors similar offerings found on popular messaging services like WhatsApp, Instagram, and Apple’s Messages.
The inclusion of voice notes aligns with the increasing preference for this communication method, particularly among younger demographics like Gen Z.
Image and Video Sharing
The rollout of this feature is scheduled to occur over the coming weeks, according to TikTok. Users can share photos and videos by capturing new content with their device’s camera or selecting existing media from their camera roll.
Content can be edited prior to being sent, providing users with greater control over their shared media.
Prioritizing User Safety
To ensure user safety, initial message requests cannot include images or videos. A user initiating a conversation for the first time is restricted to sharing content already existing on TikTok, rather than sending newly captured photos or videos.
TikTok will also provide reminders to users regarding privacy considerations and the importance of being mindful of their recipients when sharing content.
Protections for Younger Users
While DMs are currently unavailable to users under 16, additional safeguards are being implemented for those aged 16 to 18. Automated systems are in place to detect and prevent the transmission of images containing nudity.
Specifically, senders of nude images will be blocked, and recipients will not receive the content. Users over 18 have the option to activate this safety feature within their app settings.
Fostering Connection and Expression
TikTok views these new features as a means for users to express themselves and connect with others in familiar and convenient ways.
Continued Development of Messaging Features
This update represents a continued effort to enhance TikTok’s messaging product. Last year, the platform introduced group chats supporting up to 32 participants.
Furthermore, Creator Chat Rooms were recently launched, providing a dedicated space for creators and their followers to interact directly.
