Threads Updates: Custom Display Names & Cover Images

Instagram Threads Pursues Feature Parity with X and Bluesky
Instagram Threads is currently undergoing development to incorporate new functionalities. These enhancements aim to align the platform’s user experience with those of X (previously Twitter) and the social networking service Bluesky.
Display Names and Cover Images in Development
Meta, the parent company of Threads, is internally testing the implementation of customizable display names and the addition of cover images to user profiles. This was confirmed by a company spokesperson to TechCrunch on Tuesday.
The discovery of these features was initially made by reverse engineer Alessandro Paluzzi, who routinely identifies unreleased features during their development phase.
Addressing Limitations of Instagram Integration
Currently, Threads leverages Instagram for user display names. This integration prevents users from directly modifying their display names within the Threads environment. Allowing independent display name customization would grant users greater control over their online identity.
The existing system presents a challenge for users migrating from X. They may desire to maintain consistent usernames across platforms for ease of discovery by their existing followers. Currently, achieving this requires altering their Instagram name, which is not an optimal solution.
Towards Greater Platform Independence
The close tie between Threads and Instagram has presented certain limitations. However, Meta appears to be considering a move towards increased autonomy for Threads. This shift is logical, particularly given the platform’s substantial growth, now boasting over 100 million daily active users and 300 million monthly active users.
Details of the New Features
According to screenshots shared by Paluzzi on X, the display name will be prominently featured on both user profiles and individual posts within Threads.
Users will be granted the ability to update their display name up to two times within a 14-day period.
Enhanced Profile Personalization
The addition of cover photos to profiles will provide users with a novel means of personalizing their accounts. This functionality mirrors similar features found on X and Bluesky, enabling users to express their individuality and attract attention.
Future Rollout Uncertain
As these features are still in the prototype stage, the timeline for their potential public release remains unknown. It is currently uncertain if or when Meta will officially implement these changes.
