Threads Moves to Threads.com - New Web App Update

Instagram Threads Relocates to Threads.com
Meta’s social networking platform, Instagram Threads, a direct competitor to X, is undergoing a domain change. The platform is officially transitioning from the website address Threads.net to Threads.com.
This shift is happening concurrently with several enhancements to the Threads web application. These improvements aim to provide a more streamlined user experience.
Web App Improvements
Users will now find it easier to navigate and access key features within the web app. This includes custom feeds, previously saved posts, and posts they have liked.
Additional tools are being implemented to facilitate the creation of new columns, the copying of posts for resharing purposes, and the discovery of familiar creators from the X platform.
The Domain Transition Explained
Initially, when Threads launched in July 2023, the Threads.net URL was utilized. This was due to the Threads.com domain being owned by a separate startup, backed by Sequoia Capital, which functioned as a Slack alternative.
That startup was subsequently acquired by Shopify last year.
In September 2024, Meta secured ownership of the Threads.com domain name. A redirection was then established, sending traffic from Threads.com to Threads.net.
Effective immediately, this redirection process is being reversed. Users accessing Threads.com will be directed directly to their Threads home screen.
Conversely, those entering Threads.net into their browser will now be automatically redirected to Threads.com.
Strategic Implications
This change provides Meta with a more memorable and easily recognizable URL for its rapidly growing social application. As of Meta’s latest earnings report in January, Threads boasts over 320 million monthly active users.
The rebranding effort is intended to strengthen the app’s competitive position against X, which also benefits from a concise and memorable domain name.
Further Updates to the Web App
Instagram’s head, Adam Mosseri, announced additional minor updates to the Threads web app on Thursday. These updates are particularly geared towards content creators.
Custom feeds will now appear in the web app in the same sequence as they do on the mobile application.
Access to liked and saved posts will be simplified, available directly through the main menu, eliminating the need to create a pinned column.
Enhanced Sharing Capabilities
A new feature allows users to copy Threads posts as images, rather than relying on screenshots. This will streamline the process of sharing content across different platforms, such as Instagram.
Users can now add a new column by simply clicking a dedicated icon located on the right side of the screen.
Post Composition Improvements
A plus “+” button in the bottom right corner of the screen will open a new window for composing posts.
Creator Discovery
A new feature facilitates the discovery and following of creators previously followed on X. This functionality, introduced earlier this month, requires users to download an archive of their X data and upload it to Threads.
Users who have utilized this feature have been presented with a prompt offering the ability to “Find popular creators from X.” Meta confirms that this feature remains in a testing phase.
