Threads Updates: Hidden Words & Time Limits

Threads Introduces Independent Hidden Words Feature
Meta’s Threads, a direct competitor to X, has implemented its own dedicated Hidden Words setting. This functionality now operates distinctly from its integration with Instagram.
The new feature empowers users to filter content containing unwanted words, phrases, or emojis across various sections of the platform. This includes feeds, search results, user profiles, and replies.
Separation from Instagram Filtering
Previously, the Hidden Words feature was unified with Instagram. Consequently, filters applied on one platform affected both. Now, Threads users can curate a separate list of hidden terms.
This allows for a more personalized experience on Threads without influencing the content displayed on Instagram.
Temporary Filter Options
Threads has also introduced the ability to set time limits for these filters. This addresses scenarios where permanent blocking isn't desired.
Users can now configure filters to automatically expire after 30 days. This effectively "snoozes" the filter, allowing related posts to reappear in the app at a later time.
For instance, this is useful for avoiding spoilers for a television show you haven't yet finished, with the intention of viewing related content once you are current with the series.
Towards Independence
This development follows a two-week period of testing for a separate DM inbox for Threads, distinct from Instagram’s direct messaging system.
These announcements, including the updates to direct messages, indicate Meta’s potential strategy to establish Threads as a more self-sufficient service, independent of Instagram.
Ongoing Feature Rollouts
As Threads actively competes with X, the platform is consistently introducing new features on a monthly basis.
Recent additions include the ability to view posts from users on the fediverse within a dedicated feed and to directly search for fediverse users within Threads.
Furthermore, the platform is currently testing a spoiler text feature and has enabled creators to utilize their Threads profiles for sharing links and monitoring click-through rates.
