Threads Follows X Creators: New Feature Test

Threads Introduces Cross-Platform Following from X
Meta has initiated testing of a new functionality within Threads, enabling users to seamlessly follow creators they already engage with on X. This development was officially confirmed to TechCrunch by the company.
Facilitating Creator Connections
According to Meta spokesperson Alec Booker, the ongoing test focuses on simplifying the process of discovering and following creators from alternative platforms directly within Threads. The aim is to enhance connectivity with relevant individuals and discussions.
This feature addresses a significant challenge faced by creators who have transitioned from X to platforms like Threads and Bluesky. Often, these creators experience a loss of their established audience during such migrations.
Addressing Community Building Challenges
Users have also encountered difficulties in replicating the communities they previously cultivated on X. This new functionality is designed to streamline the transition for both creators and new Threads users.
The initial discovery of this beta feature was made by Jane Manchun Wong, a security researcher and former employee of Meta.
How the Feature Works
Some Threads users, including those at TechCrunch, have been presented with a pop-up notification offering the ability to “Find popular creators from X.”
This pop-up directs users to the beta feature, providing guidance on downloading their following list from X and importing it into Threads.
Matching Creators Across Platforms
The precise method Meta employs to match creator profiles between X and Threads remains unclear. The company indicates the feature will initially focus on “popular creators,” suggesting not all followed accounts will be transferable.
Meta has not yet provided a response to TechCrunch’s inquiry regarding the specifics of this matching process.
Threads' Growing Momentum
Features such as this are contributing to Threads’ emergence as a viable alternative to X, demonstrating consistent growth. Recent reports indicate that Threads has surpassed 320 million monthly active users (MAUs).
This represents an increase from the 300 million MAUs reported in December, positioning Threads on a comparable scale to X, despite differing methods of MAU measurement across companies.
- Key Feature: Cross-platform following from X to Threads.
