Threads App Users Approaching X (Twitter) Daily Active Users

Instagram Threads Nearing X in User Base
Recent data from Similarweb, a market intelligence firm, indicates that Instagram Threads is rapidly approaching its primary competitor, X, in terms of mobile application users.
In June 2025, Threads’ iOS and Android app registered 115.1 million daily active users. This represents a substantial year-over-year increase of 127.8%. Conversely, X recorded 132 million daily active users, but experienced a 15.2% decline in its year-over-year growth.
Growth of Decentralized Social Networks
The decentralized social network Bluesky demonstrated significant growth, achieving a 372.5% year-over-year increase as of June. However, its worldwide daily active user count remains relatively modest at 4.1 million.
Bluesky currently boasts over 37 million registered users, according to its own reported data.
Late last year, Bluesky benefited from an influx of users following the U.S. presidential elections. This was driven by users departing X in response to Elon Musk’s increasing alignment with President Trump.
This initial surge in popularity began to decelerate earlier in the current year. More recently, Bluesky has faced criticism for allegedly becoming an echo chamber with a strong left-leaning bias, potentially prompting some users to return to Threads.
The Current Competitive Landscape
Despite its long-term potential stemming from its open and user-configurable infrastructure, the immediate competition is focused between Threads and X.
The data suggests Threads is poised to become a more formidable competitor to X on both iOS and Android platforms. This could lead to a greater share of advertising revenue, which currently represents Meta’s sole monetization strategy for Threads.
However, this competition is largely confined to mobile devices. X maintains a significant advantage in web traffic.
Similarweb’s findings reveal that X’s worldwide daily web visits are considerably higher than Threads’, with 145.8 million and 6.9 million respectively in June 2025.
Threads’ web traffic is only slightly ahead of Bluesky’s 5.3 million average daily web visits.
For Bluesky, this figure likely indicates that casual users are accessing its website to view posts, but may not be sufficiently engaged to download the mobile application.
Meta prioritized its mobile app for Threads from the outset, launching it before the web application and achieving greater traction as a result.
Regional Differences: The U.S. Market
The situation differs somewhat within the U.S. market.
Bluesky recorded 2.4 million average daily web visits from U.S. users in June, surpassing Threads’ 985,200. X remains the dominant platform, with 33.1 million average daily web visits in the U.S.
On mobile, the competition between Threads and X is closer, with Meta’s social network registering 15.3 million U.S. daily active users on iOS and Android, compared to X’s 22.9 million. Bluesky’s mobile presence in the U.S. is considerably smaller, with 1.1 million daily active users.
Bluesky’s Long-Term Strategy
Bluesky’s future success may depend less on attracting users dissatisfied with other platforms and more on its investment in a broader, open social ecosystem.
Users joining Bluesky solely as an alternative to X may not remain if their needs are not immediately met, potentially returning to X or migrating to Threads.
Those drawn to Bluesky by its underlying technology are more likely to remain engaged and observe its long-term development.
User Statistics
Meta reports that Threads has 350 million monthly active users. X, as a private company, is no longer obligated to publicly disclose its metrics.
Elon Musk previously claimed that X has 600 million monthly active users.
