The Challenges of Home Renovation and Electrification

Homeowners universally agree that renovation projects present significant challenges. Securing a reliable contractor and establishing a reasonable price point are often sources of considerable uncertainty.

Numerous startups have emerged aiming to assist homeowners with electrification initiatives. These include the installation of solar panels and the replacement of traditional gas furnaces with more efficient heat pumps.

However, a persistent obstacle remains: the high cost of customer acquisition, frequently exceeding 50% of the project's overall expense.

Pearl Edison's Approach: Partnering with Utilities

Pearl Edison proposes a novel solution – collaboration with utility companies.

“We are, fundamentally, capitalizing on the established brand recognition and inherent trust that utilities possess,” explained Evan Anderson, co-founder of Pearl Edison, in a recent interview with TechCrunch.

Seed Funding and Investor Confidence

This innovative strategy has attracted substantial investment. The Detroit-based startup recently secured $3.3 million in seed funding.

The round was led by New System Ventures and Commonweal Ventures, with participation from Lightbank and Newlab. TechCrunch was given exclusive access to this funding announcement.

How Pearl Edison Facilitates Energy Retrofits

Pearl Edison collaborates with utilities to pinpoint customers who stand to gain the most from energy efficiency upgrades. This includes installations of heat pumps and improvements to home insulation.

The company develops customized, white-labeled websites for these utility partners.

Furthermore, Pearl Edison assists in the execution of marketing campaigns designed to encourage enrollment in energy efficiency programs.

Guaranteed Pricing and Project Verification

Utilizing diverse data sources, Pearl Edison designs each project and provides a guaranteed price to the homeowner.

Following an initial plan generated by their software, field technicians are dispatched to verify the accuracy of the assessment before finalizing the design.

Contractor Network and Cost Savings

Completed projects are then assigned to a network of pre-approved, vetted contractors for installation.

Pearl Edison generates revenue from these installations, projecting that the majority of jobs will be completed at a cost below the initial quote.

Homeowners are also expected to realize savings, as Pearl Edison’s bulk contracting power reduces costs by eliminating the contractors’ customer acquisition expenses.

Current Partnerships and Future Expansion

Currently, Pearl Edison has established programs with DT Energy in Michigan, Duquesne Light in the Pittsburgh region, and the city of Ann Arbor, Michigan.

The company anticipates adding two additional utility partners within the current year.

“We have consistently found these utilities to be collaborative and effective partners,” Anderson stated.
