Apple's New iMac and the Curious Case of the Ethernet Port

Apple has recently unveiled the latest iMac, featuring the company’s proprietary M1 silicon. Alongside the numerous enhancements and improvements, a noteworthy addition is a redesigned power adapter. This new power brick incorporates an unexpected feature for the Apple ecosystem: an Ethernet port.

A Unique Placement

Initially, positioning a crucial input/output (I/O) port on the power adapter might appear unconventional. However, this design choice potentially foreshadows the inclusion of this functionality in future Apple laptop models, where it would be considerably more practical.

The M1 iMac boasts a significantly slimmer profile compared to its predecessor. Apple likely prioritized maintaining this sleek design, leading to the decision to exclude the Ethernet port directly from the computer itself.

Connectivity and Design Considerations

The iMac’s I/O options are limited to a 3.5mm audio jack and multiple USB-C ports. The power adapter utilizes a novel magnetic connector, and crucially, doesn’t occupy one of the computer’s USB-C ports. Consequently, the Ethernet port was integrated into the power supply unit.

This placement offers several benefits. It minimizes cable clutter at the rear of the computer and simplifies connectivity – aspects that are even more vital for portable devices.

Potential for Future Products

Apple has a history of sharing components and accessories across its product range. Therefore, it’s highly probable that this power adapter will be extended to other devices within the Apple lineup.

The magnetic MagSafe power connector was discontinued when Apple transitioned to USB-C on its laptops in 2016. The return of a similar accessory would be a welcome development. The Ethernet port was previously removed from the MacBook Pro in 2012.

Existing Solutions and Market Gaps

Several third-party manufacturers offer accessories for Apple power adapters. Products like the Twelve South PlugBug Duo add USB ports to the adapters. However, none currently provide an Ethernet connection.
