First Movie Studio in Space: Coming to the ISS in 2024

Space Studio and Arena Planned for ISS Connection

A dedicated module designed to accommodate a film studio and a sports arena is projected to link with the International Space Station as early as December 2024.

The initiative is being spearheaded by Space Entertainment Enterprise (SEE), the company co-producing a feature film starring Tom Cruise, portions of which are slated for filming in orbit.

SEE-1: A Hub for Space-Based Entertainment

Upon operational status, SEE-1 intends to facilitate the production of television and film content. Furthermore, the module will host musical performances and sporting competitions, all of which can be captured through filming or live streaming, as reported by Variety.

Axiom Space, the recipient of a NASA contract awarded two years prior for the construction of the inaugural commercial ISS module, has been selected as the builder for this station.

The current plan involves connecting SEE-1 to Axiom’s section of the ISS, assuming all development phases proceed as scheduled.

Future Detachment and Continued Operation

Axiom Station is currently slated to detach from the ISS in 2028, with SEE-1 remaining integrated as part of the independent station.

Financial Considerations and Competition

The feasibility of SEE and Axiom’s ambitious plan is yet to be fully determined. Notably, SEE has not yet disclosed the projected cost of the facility and is presently organizing a funding campaign.

Notably, Russia achieved a milestone last year by completing the filming of a full-length fictional movie in space, preceding Tom Cruise and director Doug Liman’s planned project.

The Challenge, the Russian film, is anticipated for release in the current year. Cruise and Liman are expected to commence filming their movie aboard the ISS later in 2022.
