Computer Science Nightmare: Is the Dream Over?

The Declining Fortunes of New Computer Science Graduates

The widely held belief that a coding education guarantees financial success is now being challenged. Recent data indicates a significant shift in the job market for those with computer science degrees.

A study conducted by the Federal Reserve Bank of New York reveals that unemployment rates among new computer science graduates currently range from 6.1% to 7.5%. This figure is more than double the unemployment experienced by graduates in fields like biology and art history.

Real-World Struggles of Recent Graduates

The situation on the ground is proving particularly difficult for many. Manasi Mishra, a 21-year-old Purdue University graduate, was led to believe she would receive a six-figure salary upon graduation. However, she only secured a single job interview – with Chipotle, which ultimately did not result in an offer.

Zach Taylor’s experience is equally disheartening. Since graduating from Oregon State University in 2023, he has submitted applications for almost 6,000 tech positions. Despite this extensive effort, he has received only 13 interviews and no job offers. He was even denied a position at McDonald’s due to a perceived lack of relevant experience.

The Impact of AI and Corporate Restructuring

Several factors are contributing to this challenging landscape. The rise of AI programming tools is reportedly leading to the elimination of entry-level positions. Simultaneously, major technology companies, including Amazon, Meta, and Microsoft, are implementing significant workforce reductions.

Many students describe being caught in what they term an “AI doom loop.” They are utilizing AI to submit a high volume of applications, while companies are employing AI to automatically reject candidates, often within a matter of minutes.

Fortunately, Mishra was able to find employment through a successful cold application and strategic use of TikTok to highlight the difficulties in the current job market.
