The Beatles’ “Now and Then” Wins Grammy for Best Rock Performance

On Sunday evening, The Beatles were awarded the Grammy for Best Rock Performance for their track “Now and Then.” This victory represents a historic moment, as it is the first time a song utilizing artificial intelligence assistance has received this honor.

AI's Role in Restoring a Lost Recording

It’s important to clarify that Paul McCartney did not employ AI to generate a simulated John Lennon. The application of AI centered on enhancing the audio quality of a previously unreleased piano demo recorded by Lennon before his passing.

Specifically, noise reduction technology was utilized to clarify the recording. This technology shares similarities with systems employed by popular video conferencing platforms such as Zoom, FaceTime, and Google Meet, designed to eliminate distracting background sounds.

Previous Attempts and Technological Advancements

Efforts were initially made in the 1990s to restore Lennon’s demo, but the available technology proved insufficient to clearly isolate his vocals from the recording’s inherent limitations.

A renewed effort began in 2022. The team learned from the techniques used by filmmakers during the creation of the archival documentary “Get Back.”

These filmmakers had successfully employed advanced audio isolation methods to improve the listenability of poorly recorded demos. This inspired the revisiting of “Now and Then,” ultimately leading to its completion and Grammy recognition.
