Duolingo's AI Shift: Why the Backlash Didn't Matter

Duolingo's Revenue Surpasses Expectations Amidst AI Transition
Duolingo reported on Wednesday that it exceeded its quarterly revenue projections. This occurred despite considerable public criticism stemming from its decision to prioritize generative AI over human contributors.
Following the announcement, Duolingo’s stock experienced a substantial increase, rising by nearly 30%.
Shift to an "AI-First" Strategy
In April, CEO Luis von Ahn articulated a strategic shift towards becoming an “AI-first” company. This involved a phased reduction in the utilization of contract workers.
Furthermore, teams were advised against expanding their workforce unless automation proved insufficient to meet their needs.
The integration of generative AI enabled Duolingo to launch 148 new language courses, effectively more than doubling its existing catalog.
Accelerated Content Creation
“Scaling our content to reach more learners would have taken decades without AI,” von Ahn stated previously. “We have a responsibility to provide this content to our learners as quickly as possible.”
Despite some user feedback suggesting a decline in app quality due to these AI features, the company’s financial performance indicates otherwise.
Financial Growth and User Engagement
Duolingo now projects annual revenue exceeding $1 billion. Daily active users have also increased by 40% compared to the previous year.
While this growth is noteworthy, it represents the lower end of the company’s anticipated range of 40% to 45%, a point raised by an investor during Wednesday’s earnings call.
Addressing Public Sentiment
“Our performance fell towards the lower end of expectations because of statements I made regarding AI, which lacked sufficient context,” von Ahn explained. “This resulted in negative reactions on social media.”
To address this, the company shifted its social media strategy. They ceased posting potentially controversial content and began prioritizing posts designed to improve public perception.
This adjustment proved effective in enhancing overall sentiment.
Social Media Response
On TikTok, critical comments regarding Duolingo’s AI approach continue to dominate the discussion under its videos.
Users frequently question whether videos featuring multiple individuals are created using AI, prompting Duolingo to respond with assurances that they are produced by their dedicated team.
Bottom Line Remains Positive
Regardless of evolving public opinion, Duolingo’s financial results remain strong. From the company’s perspective, this is the paramount consideration.
