Tessell Secures $60 Million to Revolutionize Multi-Cloud Database Management

Tessell, a company pioneering a multi-cloud database-as-a-service solution, has successfully completed a new funding round, raising $60 million. This investment was spearheaded by WestBridge Capital and will fuel the company’s expansion plans.

A key component of this expansion involves the launch of an innovative, AI-powered conversational database management service.

The Growing Challenges of Modern Data Management

In today’s data-driven landscape, organizations increasingly grapple with the complexities of data management and storage. Traditional database systems often lack the necessary adaptability for diverse cloud environments.

Furthermore, many existing managed database services present significant cost barriers, particularly for applications demanding high performance.

Tessell’s Innovative Approach

Tessell is designed to address these challenges directly with its unique platform.

The startup leverages the extensive database kernel expertise of its founders to deliver superior operational database management capabilities. This positions Tessell as a competitor to established relational database services, including Amazon’s RDS.

Vision and Founding Principles

“Tessell is a tessellation of enterprise data,” explained co-founder and CEO Bala Kuchibhotla in a recent interview.

Kuchibhotla founded Tessell after gaining valuable experience over a decade at Oracle and four years at Nutanix. He identified a clear need to fundamentally “reimagine” how organizations manage their operational data.

Performance and Cost Benefits

Tessell asserts that its technology delivers a substantial performance increase – 10x greater than current database management services.

This enhanced performance is coupled with significant cost savings, estimated at 64-73% over a three-year total cost of ownership, thanks to its utilization of NVMe infrastructure.

The platform eliminates traditional IOPS (input-output operations per second) metering, providing consistently high IOPS, reduced latency, and predictable pricing.

Tessell also guarantees zero downtime during migrations and ensures continuous database availability, even in the event of cloud service disruptions.

Broad Cloud and Database Engine Compatibility

Tessell is designed for interoperability, supporting all four major cloud providers:

  • AWS
  • Google Cloud
  • Microsoft Azure
  • Oracle Cloud

The platform also supports a wide range of leading database engines, including:

  • MySQL
  • Oracle
  • Microsoft SQL Server
  • PostgreSQL
  • MongoDB

AI Integration and Future Capabilities

“If you are an AI application, you can spin up [or] spin down the databases that you need on the Tessell infrastructure,” stated Kuchibhotla to TechCrunch.

Tessell supports both traditional databases with vector extensions and dedicated vector databases.

The company’s new funding will be instrumental in developing its AI-powered conversational technology, aiming to further streamline data management processes.

Company Growth and Customer Base

This Series B funding round, an all-equity investment, included participation from B37 Ventures, Rocketship.vc, and existing investor Lightspeed Venture Partners.

Headquartered in San Ramon, California, with an additional office in Bengaluru, India, Tessell currently employs approximately 143 individuals.

The company boasts a customer base of 40, with two-thirds of its clients located in India. Notable customers include Moody’s, Aditya Birla Capital, Tata Capital, Jubilant Ingrevia, and Forbes.

Expansion Plans and Future Development

The newly acquired funding will facilitate Tessell’s expansion into Europe and the Asia-Pacific region.

The company also intends to strengthen its go-to-market strategy to accelerate growth in the U.S. and India, and to increase investment in research and development.

Looking ahead, Tessell is exploring the potential of analytics as a future business line, enabling companies to analyze data from platforms like Snowflake, Google BigQuery, or Microsoft Fabric directly within the Tessell environment.
