Tesla Powerwall 2 Recall: Expanded to US Due to Fire Risk

Tesla Recalls Over 10,000 Powerwall 2 Home Batteries

Tesla is initiating a recall impacting more than 10,000 Powerwall 2 home battery systems distributed within the United States.

This action follows reports of approximately two dozen incidents involving the batteries. These incidents include overheating, the emission of smoke, and, in some cases, actual fires.

Recent Recall History

The U.S. recall is occurring shortly after a similar recall was issued by Tesla for Powerwall 2 batteries in Australia. The Australian recall was prompted by reports concerning fires.

Investigations into the Australian incidents revealed that the battery cells utilized within the Powerwalls were sourced from a third-party supplier whose identity remains undisclosed.

Currently, Tesla has not yet responded to inquiries regarding the manufacturer of the cells affected by the U.S. recall.

Incident Details Reported to the CPSC

According to the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC), a total of five Powerwall units have experienced fires.

These fires resulted in minor property damage. Additionally, six units began emitting smoke, and eleven others overheated. The news was initially reported by Electrek.

Recall Information and Timeline

The official recall notice was published on the CPSC website today. The Powerwalls subject to this recall were sold between November 2020 and December 2022.

The CPSC advises owners to first confirm their batteries are connected online. Subsequently, they should utilize the Tesla app to determine if their specific unit is included in the recall.

Remedy and Replacement Process

Tesla will remotely discharge any affected Powerwall units that are currently online.

Following the discharge process, the company will provide replacement units to customers whose batteries are confirmed to be part of the recall.
