Tesla has initiated a recall of its Powerwall 2 home battery systems in Australia. This action follows reports of fires resulting in limited property damage, as detailed by the Australia Competition and Consumer Commission (ACCC).

Recall Details and Affected Units

The recall encompasses a currently undefined quantity of Powerwall 2 units manufactured in the United States. These units were sold within Australia between November 2020 and June 2022. The battery cells utilized in these systems were sourced from a third-party supplier whose identity has not been disclosed.

Fortunately, despite the reported incidents of fire, no injuries have been sustained as a result of this issue, according to the ACCC’s official recall notice.

Powerwall 2 Functionality

The Powerwall 2 boasts a storage capacity of 14 kWh utilizing lithium ion battery technology. It is commonly installed in conjunction with residential solar panels. This allows homeowners to store surplus energy produced during daylight hours.

Virtual Power Plant and Warranty Benefits

Tesla customers have the option to integrate their batteries into a virtual power plant. This participation aids in stabilizing the electricity grid during periods of peak demand.

Enrolling in the virtual power plant program extends the product warranty to a maximum of 15 years. Furthermore, it provides access to time-of-use electricity rates designed to lower household energy expenses, as stated by Tesla.

Recall Process and Customer Support

Tesla is proactively notifying affected customers through the Tesla app. The company is currently undertaking a process to remotely discharge the batteries to mitigate the potential for fire.

Replacement of recalled batteries will be provided at no cost to the homeowner. The ACCC has indicated that Tesla will evaluate claims for compensation regarding lost energy savings individually, on a case-by-case basis.
