Tesla FSD: EU Approval in Doubt - Latest Updates

Tesla's FSD Approval in Europe: A Clarification

Recent assertions by Tesla regarding European regulatory approval for its Full Self-Driving (FSD) system may have been premature.

The company announced via social media that the Dutch regulator, RDW, would be granting approval for FSD usage in the Netherlands by February 2026.

This approval from RDW, responsible for vehicle licensing and registration in the Netherlands, is considered a vital step towards wider FSD deployment throughout Europe.

Tesla's Initial Announcement

Tesla’s post encouraged public engagement, stating: “RDW has committed to granting Netherlands National approval in February 2026. Please contact them via link below to express your excitement & thank them for making this happen as soon as possible.”

RDW's Response and Clarification

However, RDW has issued a statement clarifying its position. The regulator indicated that Tesla is scheduled to demonstrate FSD Supervised in February, but formal approval isn't guaranteed.

Bloomberg first reported on this clarifying statement from RDW.

According to RDW: “RDW and Tesla know what efforts need to be made to make a decision on this in February. Whether the schedule will be met remains to be seen in the coming period. For the RDW, (traffic) safety is paramount.”

Understanding Tesla's Driver Assistance Systems

All Tesla vehicles are equipped with Autopilot as a standard driver assistance system.

Owners have the option to upgrade to FSD Supervised for an additional $8,000, unlocking enhanced automated driving capabilities.

These features include automated steering and lane changes on both highways and city streets.

It’s crucial to understand that FSD is not a fully self-driving system; drivers must maintain active engagement and keep their hands on the wheel at all times.

Current FSD Availability

Currently, FSD is available in the following regions:

  • Australia
  • Canada
  • China
  • Mexico
  • New Zealand
  • Puerto Rico
  • United States
