TechCrunch Disrupt 2025: Tattd Brings Tattooing to the Convention Floor

During Tuesday morning’s events at TechCrunch Disrupt 2025, senior producer Maggie Nye revealed a new tattoo – a recognizable, pixelated cursor arrow. Becca Szkutak, also from TechCrunch, received an identical cursor design, while Theresa Loconsolo opted for a cheerful moon illustration.

Initially, it was assumed the team had ventured out to a San Francisco tattoo parlor during the conference to commemorate their friendship with tech-inspired artwork. However, the reality was far more immediate: the tattoos were applied directly at Disrupt, on the Moscone Center’s exhibition level.

A Unique Booth at Battlefield 200

Hundreds of startups showcased their innovations within the Expo Hall as part of Battlefield 200, presenting concepts ranging from robotic chefs to insurance for spacecraft and innovative plastic recycling solutions. Amidst this dynamic environment, Tattd transformed their booth into a functioning, albeit temporary, tattoo studio.

The startup leverages generative AI to produce initial design mockups. These AI-created designs aren’t intended for direct application, but instead, are used to identify artists whose existing work closely resembles the generated concept. This facilitates collaboration between client and artist for a truly original piece.

Bridging the Gap Between Vision and Artist

“Traditional AI tools struggle with nuanced requests,” explained founder Laura Schaack to TechCrunch. “If you ask for ‘a butterfly in a Japanese traditional style with heavier lines,’ they often lack the understanding to deliver a meaningful result.”

Nearby, TechCrunch deputy managing editor Karyne Levy was receiving an escape key tattoo on her upper arm.

However, Schaack’s passion for the arts runs deep.

She holds a degree in art history from New York University and is herself extensively tattooed. At Disrupt, she added a California postage stamp design near her elbow.

Industry Experience is Key

“Past attempts to disrupt the tattoo industry by individuals without personal experience have consistently failed,” Schaack noted. She believes a lack of tattoos often indicates a lack of genuine interest or understanding of the industry’s nuances.

“My deep passion for this industry, combined with my own extensive tattooing and commitment to supporting artists, drives my vision for Tattd,” she stated. The platform currently features 900 artists and provides resources, including partnerships with third parties, to assist them with healthcare and financial planning.

A flash sheet featuring the TechCrunch logo was available, but thankfully, no attendees chose to permanently display their affection for the brand on their skin.
