Tapestry App Launching in Early 2025 - Social Media & News Tracker

A Unified Social Media Experience: Tapestry's Impending Launch

The development of Tapestry, a novel application designed to consolidate social media, news feeds, and RSS subscriptions into a single platform, is nearing its final stages. Created by Iconfactory, the development team renowned for the former Twitter client, Twitterific, Tapestry was initially presented earlier this year as a solution to the increasing fragmentation of online media.

Progress Update and Launch Timeline

This week, the company provided an update regarding Tapestry’s advancement, indicating plans for an official public release in “early 2025.” The project’s Kickstarter page noted the necessity of further refinement and bug resolution before launch.

Crowdfunding Success

Iconfactory has opted for a crowdfunding approach to finance Tapestry’s development, bypassing traditional investor funding. To date, over 3,360 backers have contributed more than $177,800 to support the app’s creation.

Addressing User Frustrations

The application is poised to resonate with individuals seeking relief from the constant need to navigate numerous websites, blogs, and social media platforms. It also responds to growing user dissatisfaction with the proliferation of Twitter clones.

The Rise of Alternative Social Networks

Following Elon Musk’s acquisition of Twitter, now known as X, there has been a significant surge in interest in alternative social networking services. These include open-protocol based applications like Mastodon and Bluesky, as well as Meta’s Threads, which is actively pursuing integration with ActivityPub – the protocol utilized by Mastodon. (Several smaller applications, such as T2/Pebble, Post, and Cohost, have since ceased operations.)

Exploring the Open Social Web

This wave of experimentation within a more open social web has spurred developers to envision new user experiences for browsing these diverse services.

Competition and Similar Applications

Just recently, Flipboard introduced Surf, an application designed to function as a browser for the open web, enabling users to track RSS, Bluesky, and Mastodon content within a unified interface.

Expanding Support for Diverse Platforms

Silvio Rizzi, the developer of the popular Mac and iOS newsreader Reeder, has reimagined his application to extend beyond RSS, incorporating support for other social services like Mastodon, Bluesky, YouTube, Reddit, and more. The indie app Feeeed has also expanded its capabilities this year to include RSS, newsletters, Mastodon, Tumblr, Reddit, and others, with recent addition of Bluesky support. Furthermore, OpenVibe provides a single platform for browsing Mastodon, Bluesky, and Threads.

Unique User Interfaces and Experiences

Despite their shared objectives, each application distinguishes itself through a unique user interface and overall experience. While Reeder maintains a familiar RSS reader aesthetic, others present themselves as distinct social experiences.

Tapestry’s Hybrid Approach

Tapestry is noteworthy for its attempt to bridge both worlds, allowing users to monitor their preferred websites and blogs, and even import RSS feeds collectively via an OPML file, alongside connections to various social sources. The current beta version supports Mastodon and Bluesky, alongside webcomics, social apps like Reddit, Tumblr, and YouTube, and sources for weather and earthquake alerts – information still frequently accessed through X.

Customizable Feeds and Filtering Options

However, Tapestry’s value extends beyond simply consolidating everything into one interface. Its core strength lies in empowering users to create personalized feeds, or “timelines,” where they can selectively include sources – encompassing social sites, websites, blogs, podcasts, and more. Features like “mute” and “muffle,” inherited from Twitterific, allow for the configuration of post filtering based on keywords.

Advanced Customization Tools

A range of other customization tools will appeal to advanced users who enjoy building tailored feeds.

Interface Considerations

A current point of complexity within the application is the separation of sources – such as RSS feeds or social applications – into two distinct sections, “feeds” and “connectors.” The former populates the timeline with content, while the latter facilitates the creation of feeds to populate the timeline. Some services, like Mastodon and Bluesky, may appear in both sections. A unified “sources” section would be a preferable design.

A Viable Alternative to X

Nevertheless, Tapestry offers a compelling alternative to browsing X for staying informed about multiple social services, breaking news, and updates from favored sources.

Revenue Model and Future Availability

Iconfactory has not yet announced a precise launch date for Tapestry, but the application will be monetized through monthly and annual subscription plans.
