Firefox Bulk Screenshot: How to Take Multiple Screenshots

The Importance of Screenshots in Content Creation

I frequently utilize screenshots in my work. Regardless of the specific article or tutorial I am developing, I aim to incorporate numerous screenshots to enhance clarity and understanding for my readers.

The sheer number of screen capture tools available can be overwhelming, making it difficult to determine the best option for your needs.

I previously compiled a list of screenshot tools in a prior post, and continue to find those resources valuable. However, I recently discovered a Firefox extension that I believe is exceptional and worthy of inclusion in my existing recommendations.

Introducing Grab Them All: A Firefox Extension

Grab Them All is a useful Firefox extension designed to facilitate the capture of multiple screenshots with minimal effort. This tool is compatible with both Windows and Linux operating systems and is distributed under an Open Source license.

While there are numerous suggestions for improvements and additional features, the current functionality provides a compelling user experience.

Using the Tool: A Step-by-Step Guide

Begin by installing the extension and restarting your browser. Then, follow these instructions:

1. Create a new text (.txt) file and populate it with the URLs you wish to capture. (I have successfully tested this tool with lists containing up to 200 URLs).

Note: Consider employing a web crawler, such as Xenu, to efficiently extract URLs from a website, export them to a .txt file, and streamline the process.

2. (Optional) Establish a dedicated folder to store the captured screenshots.

3. Within Firefox, access the extension via Tools --> Grab Them All. Alternatively, you can add the tool’s icon to the address bar for quick access. To do this, navigate to View --> Toolbars --> Customize, locate the GrabThemAll button, and drag it to your toolbar.

4. In the tool’s dialog box, specify the path to the .txt file containing the URLs and the desired destination folder:

5. Initiate the tool and allow it to complete the process. The task was completed rapidly in my testing:

The designated folder will also contain a small Excel document detailing:

  • All URLs that were crawled and captured;
  • The corresponding file names within the folder;
  • The status of each URL (OK, error, or timeout).

Customizing the Tool’s Settings

The extension offers a range of configurable options to tailor its behavior to your preferences.

Access the settings by navigating to: Tools --> Addons --> Grab Them All --> Options.

From this menu, you can adjust the following:

  • The desired output file format (either jpg or png).
  • The screenshot type: choose between grabbing the entire window or capturing the entry page.
  • Window size (this also determines the output file size when set to "grab window only").
  • The maximum processing time per page (in seconds). A value of 0 indicates no time limit.
  • Output file names (I configured it to create file names based on the URL, replacing unsafe characters with underscores).
